Fact or Fiction
(Also known as two truths and a lie) Grade Level: K-12
Big Idea
This cooperative learning strategy asks students to come up with two facts and one fiction about a particular task or idea. Their group members then try to decide which one is their fiction.
Directions
1. Instruct students to write two true facts and one fiction.
2. The first student reads/shows their statements to their group.
3. Group members discuss the statements made by the student and decide which one is the "fiction."
4. When the group comes to an agreement, student 1 reveals their "fiction."
5. Then repeat steps 2-4 with until all group members have had an opportunity to share their two facts and one fiction.
When to Use
This strategy can be used across all subjects and a variety of topics. Here are some examples:
- Math: Factors of a number - Two correct and one incorrect.
- Reading: After reading a nonfiction passage students come up with two facts and one fiction.
- Science: Types of rocks - two that are igneous (or metamorphic or sedimentary) and one that is not.
- Getting to know each other: Two facts about themselves and one fiction.
Strategy Variations
- Have students come up with two fictions and one fact.
- Instead of coming up with a group consensus, have each member decide which is the fiction and keep points of whoever determines the most "fictions."
