Superintendent Message
Hello CGUHSD!
We have had a very eventful month, and I want to thank the staff and student organizations for all that they did. Additionally, the students have experienced Homecoming at both campuses that included fun activities including selecting royalty, parades, and lots of extra-curricular activities. Thanks to all who supported the fun throughout the Homecoming weeks.
I would like to recognize this month’s Staff Person of the Month:
Ms. Rosie Perez is currently the VGHS Science Department Instructional Leader (DIL) and has supported other areas of leadership. She is aspiring to become a certified administrator. Ms. Perez has readily volunteered for many different tasks and is always willing to go beyond for the betterment of the Vista Grande community. She assisted in organizing, overseeing, and took on the role of Dean of Students in charge of the Summer Education Academy (SEA). Ms. Perez stepped into the role of DIL and has performed admirably. She seeks out ways to be a valued addition to our Vista Grande community. Ms. Perez worked over fall break to ensure that the new supplies for our science classes were properly cataloged and stored for use in our classes for students. I admire many characteristics of Ms. Perez including her humble leadership style, willingness to try different things, being an exceptional teacher, who has an amazing heart for students, and dedication to serving others with her best. Mr. Danzy and I look forward to continued collaborations and working with Ms. Perez. Congratulations, Ms. Perez!
It is important the community has a detailed answer to this question, "Why do we need the override if we have a carry forward amount of approximately $13 million?” Dr. Strom, the Assistant Superintendent of Business Operations, developed an excellent presentation providing clarity in understanding school finance and budgeting. Given the complexity of the school budget and questions surrounding the carry forward and the district override, I want to provide additional details of why the override is important and how the overage will not replace the need for the override dollars. Please review this link of Dr. Strom sharing the need for the continuation of the CGUHSD override:
Regarding the school letter grade detailed information and plans, the principals will provide a date and time to invite parents to a virtual meeting to review the school data and share strategies for success. The Mastery Checks include students with perfect scores and students who have achieved mastery. They include the following:
CASA GRANDE UNION MASTERY RESULTS
Congratulations, students!
This month includes Thanksgiving Day. This day will be experienced differently by many. My hope is that we are all truly thankful. Life brings challenges to every one of us. Even amid challenges and disappointments, I choose to be thankful. Challenges often are not what they seem. When challenges are transformed into opportunities, then things are better than they seem - we learn this in life. Issues are temporary, not long term. Be thankful and give thanks. Tell others how much you appreciate what they do. If we all did this for each other, it will eventually return to you. I wish you all the best. Enjoy every day and let no one steal your joy!
Sincerely,
Dr. Anna Battle
CGUHSD Superintendent
Override Facts
Override FAQ
Budget Recap: Why Do We Set Aside Money?
Facts:
- The $8.2 million Maintenance and Operations carry-forward is a one-time use fund, therefore it cannot be used for salaries and benefits, which is ongoing.
- The $2.8 million in capital must be used for roofs, buildings, HVAC, etc. The roof at Casa Grande Union and chillers at Vista are projects that are examples of why a carry-forward in Capital Funds is a fiscally conservative approach.
- Fund 510, $2.97 million, can only be used for food service and must be spent on the cafeterias in accordance with ADE
- The assumption that this carry-forward would more than make up for the dollars the override would provide is inaccurate. The override enables the district to continue extracurricular programming in fine arts, performing arts, athletics, advanced placement classes, career and technical education, as well as aide in security staffing and to attract and retain high quality staff.
ACT Mastery Check
These progress checks will be administered every two weeks until the end of the semester and help the district support students in making progress towards the goals they set for themselves after the first ACT aligned benchmark. CGUHSD will recognize students who demonstrate excellence on these assessments, as well as those who demonstrate growth on the upcoming progress checks and the second ACT aligned benchmark which will be administered in January.
Battle Words for the Week
In "Battle Words for the Week", Superintendent Dr. Anna Battle inspires us with quotes and words of wisdom to carry out our week.
Certificate of Achievement for Excellence in Financial Reporting
Government Finance Officers Association of the United States and Canada (GFOA) has awarded the Certificate of Achievement for Excellence in Financial Reporting to Casa Grande Union High School District No. 82 for its annual comprehensive financial report for the fiscal year ended June 30, 2021. The report has been judged by an impartial panel to meet the high standards of the program, which includes demonstrating a constructive "spirit of full disclosure" to clearly communicate its financial story and motivate potential users and user groups to read the report. The Certificate of Achievement is the highest form of recognition in the area of governmental accounting and financial reporting, and its attainment represents a significant accomplishment by a government and its management. The CGUHSD Business Services Department is led by Dr. Matthew Strom, Assistant Superintendent of Business Operations; Gina Salazar, Business Services Director; and Tami Fuller, Business Services Manager.

We are so proud of these young gentlemen for working together for this community event.
Hispanic Heritage Month: Staff Interviews
CGUHS Spanish class students interviewed staff to learn about their Hispanic roots and/or Hispanic connections. Students were curious about their traditions and, especially, about traditional food. Special thanks to the wonderful staff who shared with the students.
Hispanic Heritage Month: Activities
CGUHS Spanish classes are celebrating Hispanic Heritage Month.
Hispanic Heritage Month: Guest Speakers
VGHS Spanish class students celebrated Hispanic Heritage Month from September 15-October 15. Six (6) Hispanic community members came to talk to all the Spanish classes on Friday, September 23: Mr. Ed Morales (Arizona Department of Agriculture), Dr. Maria Roel (CGUHSD), Mr. Jose Munoz (CGUHSD), Mr. Richard Rosales (APS), Mr. Max Monarrez (LUCID), and Mr. Anabel Bevan (BANNER). They shared their experiences as Hispanics in their personal lives and careers. Each speaker inspired the students to be the best they can be and to never forget their roots.
Hispanic Heritage Month Art Display
Ms. Cynthia Fuller (CGUHS) Art I & II students created mastercopies of Hispanic American artists to better understand the techniques, colors, and styles of artists from America with a Hispanic background. Mastercopies are when young artists recreate something completed by a 'master' or experienced artist so they may strengthen their own skills. Students used pastels to recreate these looks on watercolor paper (to help hold the pigment of the pastels). Also displayed are a few Spanish class projects - Lucha Libre masks with paper mache.
Spanish Classes Celebrate Day of the Dead
Day of the Dead celebration took place in the CGUHS Spanish classes during the first week of November. Students created an Altar de Ofrendas in the classroom and Altares in shoe boxes. The Cougars are instructed by Joshua Bahen, Norma Machelor, and Marqué Matthews.

Several Engineering students recently participated in a training for amateur HAM radio operators as part of their high-altitude balloon research project. The Cougars are advised by John Morris, CTE Engineering/CTE Software & App Design/Mathematics teacher.
FFA Receives Living to Serve Grant from National FFA Organization
CGUHS’s FFA (Future Farmers of America) has been selected to receive a Living to Serve Grant of $1200 from the National FFA Organization to help feed those in need in the community by planting a variety of fruit trees and a blackberry patch on campus. Agriscience students will develop such a project by installing irrigation and trellises for their blackberry plants, and the planting of such plants and trees. Over the years, as students develop this new project on their campus and learn how to care for and harvest the crop, it is their hope to invite the community to participate in an annual u-pick opportunity while also donating to their local food bank to help those who are in need. For more information on the grant and a complete list of sponsors, visit FFA.org/livingtoserve. The Cougars are advised by Casey Farnsworth, CTE Agriscience teacher.

AP Physics
In September, Ms. Armada’s CGUHS AP Physics students participated in a laboratory activity called Kinematics Investigations.
Investigative Science
Ms. Malonzo’s VGHS freshman Investigative Science engaged in a collaborative group dynamic activity in September 2022. The concept of Atomic Structure paved the way to create a model-making approach. According to Ms. Malonzo, “After explaining the concept of Atomic Structure, as an educator, you need to create creative ideas that would originate from their everyday experience that would enhance abstract concept. This type of activity slows students’ thinking down and encourages them to think deeply and imaginatively about scientific ideas. Thus, this also helps to clarify thinking and resolve their levels of understanding.”
Physical Science
In Mr. Rolando Santo’s VGHS Physical Science classes, students took part in "Naming Chemical Equations". This is a small group activity where every student needs to contribute to get the right answer. Collaboration, teamwork, and participation play important roles for the success of this activity. In the end, each group showed and shared their answers to the class through a presentation where everyone was welcome to ask questions.
Math 141
From Mr. Ronald Lucasia, CGUHS Mathematics teacher: “I'll never forget my students' smiles and aha moments when I integrated another game into one of my Math 141 lessons. The Classic Wood Block Game task was to build a perfect tower with the blocks. Roll the dice. Answer one of the activity's questions and then use the color chosen by the dice to shade the line connecting to the next math problem. Pull out the block, which is chosen by dice, and place the pulled wooden block on top of the tower. The game is won by the student who stacks blocks last while the tower is still standing and who correctly answers the most questions. I can tell from the kids' expressions that they had a great time playing the game.”
Algebra I
Algebra I students of Ms. Rochelle Garcia and Mrs. Maria Navarro took part in the “Graph and Treat” activity for their Chapter 4 Introduction to Functions test review on Monday, October 31. The objective was to graph equations that represent functions. Students graphed a function in a big cartesian plane that was designed in the floor. They plotted points by stepping on numbers and connecting them. Students walked their way through graphing while also teaching each other. Those who participated received a treat afterward.
Mathematics
Happy Halloween from Sir Cumference (aka Mr. Allan Fuller, CGUHS Mathematics teacher).
Media Literacy Class
(CGUHS) In Ms. Noya’s Media Literacy class, on Thursday, October 20, the group of seniors were tasked to analyze a propaganda or media product. The lesson was about how stereotypes are being represented in the media, and how they are being used and backed up with different theories related to it. The class was divided into four (4) groups in which each needed to pick a topic (place, age, gender, and ethnicity) by drawing lots. They were given ample time to select the product they wanted to talk about as a group and present their analysis in front of the class leaving Ms. Noya in awe as to how good and deliberate their presentations were. Excellent job, seniors!
English Class October Baby Bash
We all want to be remembered on our special day, don’t we? Ms. Stephan Noya has been making birthday celebrants in her English classes feel remembered on their special day. She usually gives out notes and birthday wishes with a sweet treat. Students need to feel loved, welcomed, and cared for. Remembering them on their birthdays is just one way of making them feel special.
English 9
On Thursday, September 29, Mr. Ybanez’ CGUHS English 9 students took part in a QR Code Gallery Walk as an introduction to their writing prompt on Digital Disconnect. The QR codes revealed questions that each group had to answer. When everyone in the group was done, they were given a word(s) to unscramble using scrabble tiles. All the words were related to technology or the digital world. The winning groups received a prize.
Art I
Mr. Adam Hardy (CGUHS) Art I students created masks out of cardboard that represent their true selves. High school is a tumultuous time, full of questions of identity. This project invited students to represent their true selves on a mask, essentially putting on a mask to take one off. A good example of this reverse logic is Batman who assumed his true identity when he put on the mask.
Civil Air Patrol Orientation Flight
On Friday, November 4, Vista Grande High School’s Civil Air Patrol (CAP- 131 Squadron, Charlie Flight) had four cadets take orientation flights from the Casa Grande Airport. The cadets (Skyla Barnhart, Anthony Johnson, Erick Rios, and Athena Williams) took off in a Cessna aircraft, learned basic controls, and piloted the aircraft while in the air. Each cadet had approximately 70 minutes of flight time to experience the thrill of flying and learn about aviation careers. The Spartans are advised by Civil Air Patrol/US Air Force Senior Officer, Capt. Richard Cassalata; Senior Member Ramon Estrada-Vega; and Senior Member Gary Smothers.
Girls Who Code
Girls Who Code (https://girlswhocode.com/) is on a mission to close the gender gap in technology and to change the image of what a programmer looks like and does. In 1995, 37% of computer scientists were women. Today, it is only 24%. The percent will continue to decline if we do nothing. We know that the biggest drop-off of girls in computer science is between the ages of 13 and 17. Girls Who Code is striving to building the world’s largest pipeline of future female engineers. They are reaching girls around the world and are on track to close the gender gap in new entry-level tech jobs by 2030. Girls Who Code (CGUHS) meets each Monday and Thursday before school from 7:30-8:05 a.m. in Room L100. The Cougars are advised by John Morris.

Many local businesses, libraries, after-school programs, and organizations need volunteers. Call them and see if you can volunteer. There is a formal community service log that needs completed to verify your hours. Career Opportunities
Coming Soon! Registration 2023/24
Coming Soon!! Registration for the 23-24 school year will begin in November. Details will be emailed to parents. The safety of our students is our priority. CGUHSD requests parent/guardian photo IDs to ensure the adult is entitled to enroll the student in school. This is to confirm the person enrolling the student has legal authority to do so, not to determine citizenship. The ID is checked against the birth certificate or legal guardianship paperwork provided. Acceptable forms of ID include a driver’s license or any government issued identification, foreign or domestic.
