The Weekly FIRE
Flexibility, Integrity, Respect, Effort
issue 23: 04/05/2021
Dear RLA Students and Families-
As many of you know, we at RLA have been working hard to try to start in-person learning on a date earlier than the mandated start date for high school students. There were many requirements we had to meet to be able to open on our targeted date. We learned today that, despite our best efforts, we will not be able to open early. Instead, we will be following the same timeline for our grade levels as the rest of our district. Seniors will be starting in-person instruction the week of April 19th and Sophomores and Juniors will start the week of April 26th.
We understand that this news may be disappointing and frustrating. We are also disappointed that we will have to wait a little while longer to see our students in person. We also believe that this decision is for the best because it will allow us to make sure that we are fully prepared to meet the safety and educational needs of our students.
For now, classes will continue as they have all year. Students should continue to check their school email and Schoology daily and to sign into their live classes in Teams.
Please reach out with any questions and we will see you soon.
Principal Aaron Ferguson
Reynolds Learning Academy

I bet you never heard of Flossie Wong-Staal
Flossie Wong-Staal is a Chinese American scientist who is a leader in AIDS research. Working with a team, she was able to discover the virus that causes AIDS and a related virus that causes cancer. She also did the first mapping of the HIV genes. She continues to work on a vaccine to prevent aids and a treatment for patients with HIV.
- Gio Peña, Science
Hello! Spring is here and I bet many of us can't wait to get out of the house and enjoy some of the amazing weather starting to show up! Well, the best way we can do this as a society is for everyone (who is able) to get vaccinated! Remember we need 90% of the population to be vaccinated in order to get to herd immunity. Even if you have had COVID, you and your loved ones will be better protected. I know there are a lot of people out there that are scared about how "fast" this vaccine was created and/or have questions about mRNA vaccines in general. Today's video is all about answering some of those question. mRNA vaccines are SUPER COOL! This type of vaccine, which has been 50 years in the making, may be the key to curing cancer, HIV, and other challenging deceases we see today.
Here are some of the questions that will get answered during today's The Science Behind COVID
- Why this vaccine way able to be produced in under a year
- What the different types of vaccines are
- What an mRNA vaccine is (pFizer-BioNTech and Moderna)
- What a DNA vaccine is (AstraZenica and Johnson & Johnson)
I hope you enjoy and feel free to ask me questions! I love to talk about this stuff! (gpena@RSD7.net)
