Battle of Fredericksburg took place in Fredericksburg, Virginia from December 11-15, 1862. The Union leader was Major General Ambrose E. Burnside and the Confederate leader was General Robert E. Lee. There were about 17,000 deaths, with most of them being Union soldiers, and the Confederate side won. Burnside attempted to gain control over Richmond, the capital of the Confederate states, but thanks to the defeat, as well as other defeats while under his lead, he was eventually replaced in January 1863.

Surrender at Appomattox Court House
After suffering several defeats, and losing many men, Robert E. Lee realized that there was no way out but to surrender to Major General Ulysses S. Grant on April 9, 1865. The official surrender papers were signed at the Appomattox Court House. However, him surrendering was after he attempted to win one last time, with the help of Confederate soldiers. After his surrender, United States officially ended the Civil War
