Judaism place of worship
The synagogue is the Jewish place of worship, but is also used as a place to study, and often as a community centre as well. Orthodox Jews often use the Yiddish word shul (pronounced shool) to refer to their synagogue. In the USA, synagogues are often called temple.
Rabbi
A Jewish scholar or teacher, especially one who studies or teaches Jewish law. Also known as the worship leader.
The star of David
Represents the High Holy Days. Often an accompaniment of the Menorah. Over time the Star of David became identified with the Jews, and has long since been used as a symbol of Judaism, as a religion, and of the Jewish people as a whole.
Fasting
Fasting is primarily a movement of willing to reduce the consume from certain or all food, drink, or both, for a period of time. This is usually a period of 24 hours, or a number of days.
The Holy Book
The Torah (using the article) is the Holy Book of Judaism and is comprised of first five books of the Old Testament (Genesis, Exodus, Leviticus, Numbers and Deuteronomy). They are also called The Pentateuch. Left: A scroll containing the Torah, the 'Five Books' supposedly written by Moses.
The Holy City
Four holy cities הקודש, Yiddish: פיר רוס שטעט) is the collectiveterm in Jewish tradition applied to the cities of Jerusalem, Hebron, Safed and, later, Tiberias, the four main centers of Jewish life after the Ottoman conquest of Palestine.
