MCCHS Friday Focus

258th Issue - February 24, 2023

From the Desk of Mr. Mike Shukis

For a Christmas present I received a wonderful book titled, To Love and Be Loved: A Personal Portrait of Mother Teresa by Jim Towey. There are a number of outstanding characteristics of Mother Teresa in the book that I believe can impact a life. One of those is her thoughts and concern for humility, which I think we can all agree seem to be in such short supply. The virtue of humility for Mother Teresa was the surest path to sanctity. Her goal was for her sisters to practice the art of self-emptying and surrendering. In a 1975 letter to her sisters, Mother Teresa shared her thoughts on how to cultivate humility:

There are a few ways we can practice humility:

To speak as little as possible of oneself.

To mind one’s own business.

Not to want to manage other people’s affairs.

To avoid curiosity.

To accept contradiction and correction cheerfully.

To pass over the mistakes of others.

To accept insults and injuries.

To accept being slighted, forgotten and disliked.

Not to seek to be specially loved and admired.

To be kind and gentle even under provocation.

Never to stand on one’s dignity.

To yield in discussion even though one is right.

To choose always the hardest.

Personally, some of these I feel a good comfort level with, others, seem very difficult and I am not even in the ballpark. However, further in the book there is a chapter on A Joyful Christian. Her quote to begin the chapter, “The miracle is not that we do this work, but that we are happy to do it.” While I am sure she is talking about the work of the Missions of Charity, I believe we all can put what we do every day and every minute of every day in that quote. To Mother Teresa, “joy is the net by which we catch souls.” She knew full well that there is a happy ending to our earthly days and that God’s promise of eternal life is reliable.

Practice ACT

As our junior class prepares to take the ACT this spring, and sophomores in the future, I wanted to share an opportunity with you that is free and could provide some additional assistance in preparing for the exam.

We will be providing a free practice ACT here at Marian Central Catholic on Wednesday, March 1st. This is a day off for students, so the practice exam will be from 8:00am - 12:30pm in the library. Space is limited to the first 20 students who sign up.

Students can sign up for one or both opportunities through the Revolution Prep website. The Revolution Prep website will have links to additional free practice tests as well as some group test prep sessions, which come with a fee.

If you have any questions, please contact Mr. Wochner, College Counselor, at 815-338-4220 x120 or swochner@marian.com.

Junior Students and Parents – April ACT Registration (Deadline: Friday, March 10)

Every year, Marian Central Catholic High School serves as a test center for the ACT in April. This year, the test date will be Saturday, April 15th, 2023. The deadline to register for the April test date is Friday, March 10. Please be aware that while we serve as a test center, we are not able to reserve seats solely for our Marian Central students. If you are interested in signing up for the April 15th ACT, please register on the ACT Registration website. For the April 15th test here at Marian, be sure to use our school code: 144475 and our test center code: 174990.

Another important piece to note is, effective January 1, 2022 Illinois' public institutions will be prohibited from requiring the submission of student test scores as part of the admissions process. Overall, this is positive news and a trend we're seeing at many institutions across the country. One caveat that we want you to be aware of though is that students who wish to be considered as IL State Scholar candidates will still be required by the Illinois Student Assistance Commission (ISAC) to take the ACT or SAT during their junior year (between August 1, 2022 - June 30, 2023) to be considered for State Scholar designation.
