Thornhill Elementary PFC Newsletter

From the Principal

Dear Thornhill Families,

As I write this there is just about a week left of school. Hard to believe but it's true. And lucky for us today, the sun is out in May. Yay! Yesterday, I had the honor of being with our kindergarten student Lincoln Lai. He served as Principal for a Day and went to classes and joined the yard supervision. Below are some pics of Principal Lai running his school. Rock on Lincoln!

Next year, the time has come for a few of our beloved teachers to leave. Mrs. Holman is moving back to Seattle, Mrs. Watson is moving to Minneapolis, and Mrs. Carter is leaving the classroom to be a stip stub supporting our school in Judy Anderson's role - as she retires. We will miss these amazing staff members that have done so much for our school. Thank you so much for everything you do!!

From Brittany Watson, Kindergarten teacher

I am so grateful to have been a part of the wonderful Thornhill community the last three years. It is bittersweet leaving, but Ray and I are very excited for the next chapter of our lives. After years of living in different cities, we are making a more permanent move to Minneapolis, MN. I want to thank everyone who has helped shape our experience here. We felt embraced and supported by the Thornhill community even before my first day of school. While we are thrilled to be setting down roots in Minneapolis, a small part of us will forever remain rooted in Oakland.

From Ellyn Holman, 1st grade teacher

Five years. In five years, 120 first grade students have come through room 12's door; to a safe, inviting and supportive learning environment. The only way that was possible was through the dedication and support I received as a teacher at Thornhill Elementary. Throughout these past five years, I have learned so much; from the wonderful team of teachers, staff, parents, and students that call Thornhill their home. This community is unlike any other and I will deeply miss it. My teaching journey isn't over; just relocating to a more rainy (it's not that bad), greener, and colder state of Washington. I want to thank every family that has volunteered time, chaperoned a field trip, purchased supplies, or offered advice. Your investment has made my time at Thornhill unforgettable. Throughout this last week or so of school, please stop by room 12, as I would love to connect with you all before the end of the year. As Winnie the Pooh has said, "how lucky I am to have something that makes saying goodbye so hard." Peace out Thunderbirds!

--------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

OMG! What are we gonna do now? Please don't worry Thornhill families, you know I got this!

Joining our amazing staff in the fall are Allia Calkins (Kindergarten), Melina Nobusada (1st grade), and Maureen Whalen (2nd grade). We are fortunate to have more stellar teachers joining our faculty. You will learn more about them before the fall.

Have a great three day weekend! Next week is our last "week" of school (Tuesday-Wednesday-Thursday), all minimum days.

Best,

Mr. Daubenspeck

Summer Reading Kick-off

Hello Thornhill families!

Before we know it, summer will be here—and with summer comes the Oakland Public Library Summer Reading Program!

An Oakland Public Librarian, Pat Toney, will visit Thornhill classrooms on Thursday, May 23 to discuss the OPL summer reading program. She will give presentations to classes and provide flyers for every student. If your student missed the presentation or needs a flyer, please contact Ms. Fox at marie.fox@ousd.org, or send them to the library at school to get information.

You can read more about the Summer Reading Program here or watch a video about it here. It is a great program that encourages children to stay engaged in reading over the summer, offering incentives such as a free book and eligibility for other fun raffle prizes! And the library is full of great summertime programming and events, too.

Keep up the great work reading over the summer, Thunderbirds!

With gratitude,

Ms. Fox, Librarian

Registration Packets for Next Year Available Online Now!

Some good news for all of you. Do you hate having to come in and fill out all the emergency forms at the beginning of the school year? Well, this year they can all be filled out online and you can take care of them now. No need to wait until August!

Sign into your SchoolMint account, confirm they are returning, and then “re-enroll.” Thornhill is continuously being informed about who has completed the registration packet. Once all is complete, you are done with all the forms for next school year.

When the office staff returns in the fall, your classroom assignments will be e-mailed to you. Please do not call the office for this information. Remember that no assignment will be given until all registration forms are filled out.

If your child is a current OUSD student, the district has already created an account for you! Your username is the email address or phone number that your child's school has on file. If you need help, please use the "Forgot username?" and "Forgot password?" Again the website is here.

Thanks,

Sherry Kaetzel, Secretary
