VHS Newsletter

July 2022

From the Principal, Dr. Tobon

Viking Families and Friends,

We are halfway through the summer, and I hope you have had a good one so far. Below are a few key items I would like to bring to your attention as you and your student prepare for the upcoming academic year.

ONLINE REGISTRATION

As you prepare for the upcoming academic year, please note Returning K-12 Student Online Registration will take place Tuesday, July 19, 2022 through Friday, July 22, 2022. Returning Student Registration is to be completed using the parent/guardian’s Skyward Family Access account. Computers for those with limited access or needing assistance with registration will be available at all schools during normal working hours. The VHS Main Office is open from 7:00 a.m. to 3:00 p.m. After July 22, 2022, please call the school for an appointment.

SCHOOL SUPPLIES

Another item on your list of things to do prior to the start of the year is the purchase of school supplies. Please refer to this link for access to the current supply lists. For quite some time now, our secondary schools have had different PE uniforms at each building. Beginning with the 2022-23 academic year, the VCS secondary schools will be transitioning to the VCS PE Uniform for our physical education classes. Below are some important items to note as you help your student prepare for their upcoming PE course:

  • Although the families of the class of 2026 are used to purchasing and taking their PE uniforms home to launder them on a weekly basis, this will be a change for our current 10th through 12th grade students taking a PE course. All P.E. uniforms will be purchased and laundered by VCS families / students beginning with the 22-23 academic year. Students will be responsible for taking their PE uniforms home and laundering them.

  • P.E. uniforms will be available for purchase for $20 via Blythe’s online and in-store, and at the VHS bookstore during select days/times (e.g., open house, orientation, first week of school, etc)

    • Green, mesh shorts: $12 + tax

    • Heather gray cotton/poly shirts: $8 + tax

  • “Legacy Uniform”: Regardless of the school that they attend, all students that currently own a Valpo P.E. uniform may wear that uniform until it is no longer a viable option, (e.g. a freshman PE student may wear their middle school PE uniform at the high school, so long as it fits and is in good condition)

  • All students without P.E. uniforms will be required to purchase the VCS PE uniform

DISTRACTION-FREE LEARNING

As we work together to create a successful educational environment for students, I am asking for your help with one area that can be a challenge for many, cell phones. While I realize we are preparing our students for life after high school, some of our students are in need of guidance in this area. Cell phones can consistently create an unnecessary distraction from the learning environment. Whether it is catching up or posting on social media, answering or sending a text message, or playing a game, the class time lost to focus on the cell phone each and every time does begin to add up. Therefore, I ask that you take a few moments to have a conversation with your student about limiting cell phone use to before and after school, as well as during passing periods and lunch. This allows students to get back to the basics and focus on school.

IMPORTANT DATES

Lastly, please pencil the following dates into your calendar:

Club Spotlight

Writer's Block

Writer's Block is the creative writing club at VHS. We meet on a bi-weekly basis in OR102 to play writing games and share your own writing, including stories, poems, parts of novels, blogs, scripts, etc. There are opportunities to brainstorm and write to different prompts, to get feedback on your writing from your peers, and to make new friends who also love to write. We also have a poetry slam at the end of the year in the coffee house that is open to the whole school. If you have any questions about Writer's Block, email Ms. Kamber at ckamber@valpo.k12.in.us.

VHS Clubs

Whether you are brand new to Valpo Schools or you have been a Viking for years, VHS has a club for you! If you are interested in school government, world cutures and languages, art, music, theater, service projects, the environment, religion, robotics, academics, social issues or games, you will find a place in one or more of the over 50 clubs VHS has to offer. Be sure to check out all the clubs at VHS during Club Rush at lunches at the start of the school year. Also, be sure to check out the canvas announcements each day for information about club call out meetings.
