STAR GAZER GAZETTE

September 2022 Star Lake Newsletter

Greetings Star Lake Families,

Welcome to the 2022-2023 school year and welcome to our brand new, gorgeous school! I hope many of you had the opportunity to come and see the facility at our ice cream social or during kindergarten family meetings. We have a couple more opportunities coming up for you to stop in:

  • Our Back to School BBQ/Open House will be next Thursday, September 22nd from 5:30-7:00. You'll have an opportunity to meet with your child's teacher, join me for an informational meeting, and have a FREE hot dog dinner.
  • Also, be watching for information regarding our Star Lake/Evergreen ribbon cutting event which will be on October 13th.

Our staff and students have been busy this past week building relationships, and learning routines. At Star Lake we all strive to be KIND, SAFE AND PRODUCTIVE. We help students be successful with this by explicitly teaching behavior expectations for all areas in the school, by creating social contracts within our classrooms, and by rewarding students demonstrating positive behavior choices with Star Lake Way tickets. In addition, this week Mr. Geving (our assistant principal) and Mrs. Williams (our counselor) are visiting each classroom and delivering Harassment/Intimidation/ Bullying lessons and information. I am so proud of the positive interactions I have seen between students so far, and I know they will keep it up!

Our teachers are also focusing on learning routines and discussion protocols to help students engage in rigorous academic conversations. And, September is the month in which we conduct our iReady diagnostic assessment and use our IRLA tool to level students in reading. It’s a busy time!

Please take time to read the rest of this newsletter for important information. And, don’t forget to push the translate button for your preferred language.

Please don’t hesitate to reach out with any questions, feedback, or input you have.

Here’s to a great year!

Library Learning

Star Lake Library News

Have you seen the new Star Lake library? Please stop by to visit during Open House Night, September 22nd from 5:30 to 7. The library is beautiful with natural light, bright colors and room for all the great books.

I am Jennifer Nelson, Star Lake librarian. This is my 28th year in Federal Way Public Schools. I have an education degree with Anthropology from Western Washington University and a library media endorsement from University of Washington. I love reading books, talking about books and inspiring students through books and stories.

Star Lake students will start library classes and checking out the week of September 19th. Kindergarten will be practicing book handling skills and checking out 1 book for the classroom. First through fifth grade students check out 2 books every week to read in class or take home to read. Please remind your students to keep their library books in a safe place at home, away from pets and little ones.

Don’t forget to visit the King County Libraries with your student to check out books for home and also attend free events. One free event this Saturday, September 17th is the grand opening of the Maker Space lab at Federal Way Regional Library near Winco. It starts at 10:30.

If you have any questions or need to get a hold of me, please email me at jnelson@fwps.org or call the library at 253-945-4010.

Counselor's Corner

We are so excited to see our scholars back on campus in our beautiful new building! This month, the schoolwide theme is our school as a welcoming place where every student feels like he or she belongs. We’ll be reminding students to welcome others and act and speak in safe, respectful, and responsible ways. In addition, we’ll be reminding students of our school rules and expectations. We’ll also begin teaching the Second Step program, which includes lessons that support these behaviors. Please support your child at home in welcoming others and acting and speaking in safe, respectful, and responsible ways. Please tell your child’s teacher if you have questions about specific ways you can help your child with these behaviors at home.

As Star Lake Eagles, we always strive to be SAFE, KIND and PRODUCTIVE! Please feel free to reach out to me if you have any questions or concerns about the social emotional health of your scholar(s).

PBIS: SAFE, KIND AND PRODUCTIVE!

What an exciting month! We are back in our new school. It has been so nice to see our Star Lake families again. We are getting settled into our new building and figuring out routines. Classrooms are making social contracts. This is where the teacher has the class help create social norms and expectations for their classroom. The teacher asks 4 questions to help create a class social contract.

· How do you want to be treated by the teacher?

· How do you want to be treated by each other?

· How do you think the teacher wants to be treated by you?

· How do we want to treat each other when there is conflict?

These social contracts give students ownership of their classroom.

We are off to a great start this year!!

Nurses News:

Parents, if your scholar is missing a required vaccine. there will be a vaccine clinic at FWHS on Sept 22 from 3:30-6:30. 30611 16th Ave S in Federal Way. Please take your current vaccine records with you along with a letter from the nurse as to what your scholar is missing or your scholar's current CIS form (you can get this from our nurse).

If your scholar has an asthma inhaler or other medications needed at school, please get doctor’s orders, sign them and bring them in with the medication in pharmacy labeled box or in original containers. Having necessary medications for your child at school is very important because we are doing field trips this year, smoke from forest fires is in the area at times, and it decreases the need for parents to pick their scholar up early from school.
