Law enforcement feedback
This Wednesday, October 25 we partnered with the Northbrook Police Department to conduct a Law Enforcement drill. Det. Nicole Ochab congratulated both teachers and students on their readiness. She said the kids did a great job, which is a testament to the teachers who prepared their students for a successful execution of the plan. The drill lasted about 10 minutes, and the students returned to their scheduled activities shortly after. We look forward to partnering with the Northbrook Police Department again in spring for our second Law Enforcement drill of the year.

Halloween at Wescott
Halloween parade
We are thrilled to be hosting this year’s Halloween Parade. The parade around the building will kick off at 2:00 p.m. on October 31.
Costumes
As you plan your child’s Halloween costume this year, please keep in mind that your child will be wearing their costume all day at school. Children will not be changing into their costumes during the day. Find a costume that your child can wear comfortably during the school day and one that is appropriate for school. If your child is going to wear makeup as part of his/her costume, please be sure it is put on at home. The children can wear their makeup to school but won’t be able to apply any makeup, hair color, spray, etc. at school.
As a general rule, costumes that are gory, bloody, violent in nature or overly frightening are not permitted at school. Be cognizant of any group costumes to be inclusive of students. Additionally, weapons, even toy ones, are not allowed at school. Please also avoid masks that limit vision or costumes that interfere with ease of movement, since the students will be wearing their costume during the school day and parading outside. Take this opportunity to be creative and have fun with your child as you think about costume ideas.
What to know in case of a school closing
We are enjoying crisp fall weather now, but our climate’s typical cold and snow will approach in the coming weeks and months. With this in mind, we want to share our process for weather emergencies, so you can be prepared for how the school days will evolve when our buildings are closed.
On the first day our buildings are closed due to a weather emergency, students will NOT attend classes. Only staff will participate in a virtual professional development day.
On the second date of a weather emergency, students will participate in an eLearning Day. (eLearning will take place even if emergency days are not contiguous and the second school closure occurs weeks after the first.)
eLearning would then continue for any subsequent weather emergencies that close our buildings.
District 30 makes every effort to maintain in-person attendance. School closure decisions are made in collaboration with school leaders across Northfield Township, based on our top priority of protecting the safety of our students and staff.
In order to maintain consistency and predictability in your child(ren)’s instruction, eLearning days will mimic the master schedule for the in-person school day, as closely as possible. Any necessary variations will be communicated by the teacher.
If an eLearning Day should occur, parents will be notified and will receive an FAQ with instructions on topics like attendance; what to expect from the day; whom to contact for any necessary tech help.
Thank you for your partnership in ensuring we keep our students and staff safe during severe weather.
REMINDER: Last week, we conducted a successful test of our Emergency Notification System, which would be used in case of a school closing due to severe weather or other emergency. If you did not receive an automated call or email, please update your information in the Parent Portal.

Make a difference
The Wescott Helping Hands Committee is collecting pop tabs to donate to the Ronald McDonald House. The pop tabs will be recycled and the money is used to help support the families that stay there. Students can bring their pop tabs to their teachers for collection. Classes are collecting pop tabs all year long!
