Smore # 2
Dear KA Families,
We have been talking a lot about respect, kindness, and assertiveness. This week we practiced how to be assertive when someone is doing something that is bothering you, or is not okay. We talked about how your tone should be, how you need to make eye contact, and have a serious face. This is an important skill to learn in kindergarten: how to advocate for yourself with your friends, peers and adults. You are all amazing advocates for your children! We can't wait to see them develop their own voices this year! There are a lot of hard-workers in KA, which means we have a lot of future leaders!
Love,
Ms. Perez & Ms. Nasir

IB
The IB unit started off with Kindergarten students and teachers taking a community walk around Brooklyn Prospect School. On our walk we saw Community Helpers, Plants, Transportation, Buildings, Stores, and so much more. The community walk ended at Metro Tech where students sat and reflected on what they saw. Students drew a picture of their reflections and wrote about their favorite part of the walk. We had a beautiful time together! We are currently learning about 3 different kinds of communities: Urban, Suburban, and Rural. We learned what each community has in them and what makes them different. Students learned a song about communities and gained hands on experiences in which they had to identify and sort Urban, Suburban, and Rural community pictures in both small and whole group. Students are participating in discussions about communities and are beginning to recognize and describe the communities they live in and the people connected to them. IB has been a blast! In the coming weeks we are going to learn about community helpers. GO IB!
Caring Students
Each month, we will choose 3 students who exemplify the traits of our IB learner profile. Since September was caring, we have watched closely to see who is caring in KA! Though there are many caring friends, we could only choose three.
The month of October we will be looking for Risk Takers!

Music
Hello Brooklyn Prospect families! I am Jacob Kramer, and this is my third year teaching music at BPCS. This year I will teach Kindergarten Music twice a week through the end of January, and I will lead a Kindergarten Big Sing on Wednesday mornings all year long. I hope to see you on Wednesdays, and I hope you will share some of your songs with me!
This year in Music, Kindergarteners will learn songs, rhymes, dances, and games. We will work on singing in tune, keeping a steady beat, and playing drums and other small instruments. Kindergarteners will also learn music from other cultures, including the places that BPCS will visit on our whole-school trips.
A little more about me: I grew up playing classical guitar, and studied it in college and graduate school. A few years after graduating I discovered how fun it was to sing, dance, and be silly with music, and I have been leading children in music-making ever since. All my classes include folk music, playground games, drumming, dancing, and age-appropriate composing and instrument playing. I am super excited to make music with your students and to help support Brooklyn Prospect’s musical community!

¡En la clase de Español!
¡Hola Familias KA!
Bienvenidos to an exciting school year! Me llamo Maestra Rosado. I am happy to start my fourth year at BPCS as a Spanish teacher! This year the students, parents, faculty, and staff will experience 100% Spanish Immersion. ¡Sí! No inglés. Solo español. Our goal is to keep exposing students to the Spanish language (oral, visual and written) all the time. The Spanish immersion will be supported by theater, TPR (total physical response), storytelling, music, games, dance, art, and cultural exploration. I am super excited to see how our bilingual brains grow and develop!
KA started accepting the Spanish language with love and respect. They learned how to introduce themselves (by saying, Me llamo _______) , the body parts (cabeza, hombro, rodilla, pies) and the face (ojos, nariz, orejas, boca) through songs, dances and TPR. Currently, they are learning about the emotions (feliz, triste, enojado, enfermo ….) using emojis and theatre conventions. We are having a lot of fun en la clase de español!
There are plenty of ways you can support our learning experience and encourage your student to grow her/his interest in Español by reading books at home and listening to music in Español. Participate in a cultural events in your community that expose your student to the Spanish culture, such as plays, concerts, and festivals.
Here you can find our Spanish Hits! Keep practicing at home!

Spanish Course is looking to expand its BOOKS collection and resources. We would be very thankful for any Spanish book donations.
Muchas Gracias,
Maestra Rosado

Kindergarten Park Days
The first day of Kindergarten park is Wednesday, October 10th. Students will ride the bus to Fort Green Park. We leave for the park at 11:00 and return at 12:30 for lunch. On park days students should wear appropriate clothes for the park: Sneakers (shoes with laces), and weather appropriate clothes (layers when it is cold outside). It is also important to note, Park Days are reliant on the weather. If it is raining in the morning and the climbing materials are wet we will be unable to go to the park for safety reasons.
We would like to extend the invitation for a few parents to join our Kindergartners at the park on Fridays. Parent volunteers should meet us at Fort Greene Park at the entrance on St. Edwards & Willoughby Street at 11:15am We are looking forward to seeing you there!
