Superintendent's Update
June 5, 2020
Dear Families:
While most of my messages in recent months have been in response to COVID-19 and the closure of our schools and offices, I feel compelled to address the recent events taking place across our country surrounding the death of George Floyd in Minneapolis, and the protests that your children may be witnessing on TV, online, or on social media.
Let me first say that our first priority as a school system is, and continues to be, the safety of our students and staff; obviously in terms of their physical safety, but also in terms of feeling safe and supported in our buildings and in the greater community. Discrimination, racism, and violence all threaten the safe environment that our community deserves. We have fellow citizens who are fearful of actions of hate directed against them because of the color of their skin or because their loved one is a member of law enforcement. Let me be clear in the fact that we will not tolerate any actions that compromise the feeling of safety for any of our students, staff, or the greater community. Please know that we have staff available to help students process what has been happening. If you believe your child would benefit from speaking with a counselor, please call your school to make an appointment.
As a system and a community, we will continue to address these issues head-on and will continue to work collaboratively with our community partners such as the NAACP, the law enforcement community, local clergy, and social services agencies to ensure that our county can stand together in support of all of our citizens.
Sincerely,
Jeffrey A. Lawson, Ed.D.
