Make Good Things Happen ~ May 3, 2018
Your SEL Segment for the Week...
Finishing Strong
There are only four weeks of school left. Can you believe it? Precisely twenty days. Our students have grown leaps and bounds this year and the goal is to use these last days of school constructively; committed to collaborating, problem solving and practicing the skills we've acquired this year so students head into summer feeling successful and confident; ready for a well-deserved break. In essence, we want to finish strong.
To help your children with a strong end to the school year, you can support them at home by continuing to provide a structured time and place for homework, encourage them with difficult assignments (there will still be challenging tasks ahead) and help with studying, hold them accountable (i.e. school night bedtime, waking up on time, eating a healthy breakfast, asking a teacher for help if they are confused about something, etc.), encourage that growth mindset (the attitude of "I've got this" rather than "I give up") and simply ask how you can help them stay committed to school when the warm weather is calling and the easy summer routine is within reach.
We can finish strong. We may even finish stronger than we began. Teachers are maintaining high expectations through the end of the year while being your children's biggest cheerleaders. Four more weeks to go Coyotes. We've got this!
Friendly Reminders
Reminders from the Office
Back Parking Lot Closed between May14th-May 19th
Beginning Monday, May 14th, the back parking lot behind our kitchen area/5th grade will be closed for deliveries of roofing supplies for some summer construction work. Please do not drive or park in this area as you will block access for PISD construction vehicles that need to get through. Thank you for your cooperation.
Lost and Found
- The single most important thing that you can do to prevent the loss of any item is to write your child’s name on it or in it.
- The lost and found clothing rack and item bin are located by the entrance outside the cafeteria.
- Lost and found items are routinely purged and sent to charity. Please be sure to check lost and found routinely for clothing and other items your child may have left at school.
At the end of the school year, all remaining clothing items in Lost and Found will be donated to charity.

Huffman Elementary School Enters Second Year of IB Candidacy
Now is the time to join the Huffman community of learners as the school enters its second year of IB candidacy, with an expected authorization for the 2019-2020 school year. As the first elementary academy in Plano ISD, there is much to celebrate. The Primary Years Programme (PYP) is a learning experience that integrates multiple subject areas into a student-centered inquiry environment. Students join with highly trained teachers to create a community of learners in which everyone has ownership and participates in the learning process. PYP concepts and skills reach beyond required learning to incorporate character development and the type of global focus that leads students to a greater understanding of an increasingly complex world. Plano ISD invites you to consider Huffman Elementary for your child’s academic needs. Please contact PYP Coordinator Amy Moore at amy.moore@pisd.edu or Principal Jamey Allen at jamey.allen@pisd.edu if you would like to schedule a tour or obtain more information. For information on transfers, visit www.pisd.edu/pisdtransfer. Transfers are being accepted until June 15 or as long as space is available. Read more at www.pisd.edu/huffmanpyp.

Healthy Hair
This week our Healthy Eating banner in the cafeteria reminds us that in order to have healthy hair we also need to eat a variety of foods from all of the food groups. Foods that are high in protein like fish and nuts, foods that are high in iron like fortified whole grains and foods that high in Vitamins like fruits and vegetables help to keep our hair healthy, shiny and beautiful.
End of Year Reminders
All student medications must be picked up by a parent no later than Friday, June 1, 2018. Reminders will be sent in the next couple of weeks.
Any items left in the LOST AND FOUND will be donated to charity.
Please come check through lost and found before school ends to be sure you don't leave your child's things here at school.
Preparing for Next Year with Medications for Children
Yikes – Who is thinking about the 2018-2019 school year? Your school nurse is of course! If you are a planner then you are too. If your child has asthma, diabetes, seizure disorder or a severe allergic reaction (anaphylaxis), you may already know that having a medical action plan and proper medication for your child is important to their care at school. All of the forms you need are here: https://www.pisd.edu/Page/1697
Please do not turn these forms in until the beginning of the next school year when you bring your child’s medication to the nurse. You will see that the action plans have a page(s) just for the physician and then there are pages for the parents to sign. Physicians are very busy at the beginning of the school year so planning to get these forms completed early in summer will ensure that we have the information we need for your child. We can accept a similar form from your physician but the PISD parent pages must also be completed. If your child is in Grade 5, these same action plans are needed for students going to Grade 6.
Is your child in Grade 4 now? The school camping program will take place in late September. Again, having an action plan for your child helps us to best care for your child at camp. We carry only your child’s own medication to camp so being prepared is very important to us.
Is your child coming to Kindergarten next year? Be sure to have all of their immunizations on file BEFORE August 13 – the first day of school.
Have you set up a Parent Portal account? If not, now is the time to get on board. After August 1 you and the parents of all 50,000+ PISD students will be trying to get on the parent portal to update information and find out who your child’s teacher is. While you will still need to do that, you can get a jump start by having the basic account already set up and demographic information in place.
