Mountain Lion Minute

Week of January 4th

Mountain Lion Families,

Happy New Year to all of our students, staff and families! 2020 was a year like no other. I would like to express my sincere gratitude for all of our family members who serve as frontline workers. Thank you for devoting your strength to so many during this trying time.

This year proved to be extremely unique in a multitude of ways. We've asked our staff and students to teach and learn in ways that require more flexibility than ever before. We've asked you, our parents, to not only work your full time jobs, but to assist in the daily learning and instruction of your children along with providing childcare while our buildings were closed. The educational system has put a lot of stress on our school communities over the past 10 months. I cannot begin to thank you and our Mountain Lion staff enough for all that you have done and continue to do in supporting our students and Montgomery Elementary during this time. I am truly lucky to be part of such a special place.

As we turn our attention to 2021, we have the opportunity to continue to grow as a school community. We know that we'll continue to hit challenges along the way, but I believe we'll be stronger because of them. Our staff will continue to give it their best effort each and every day while delivering instruction in the most challenging of environments. Our students will continue to shine because that's who they are. I look forward to seeing all of their smiling faces when we return to the building on January 11th. Please do not hesitate to reach out to me if you have any questions and/or concerns. May you have a happy and healthy new year!

Virtual Instruction- Week of January 4th

Virtual instruction will take place from Monday, January 4th through Friday, January 8, 2021. This means that students will return from winter break to our schools in the hybrid model during the week of January 11th, rather than a week earlier as previously adopted. You can find questions and answers regarding this time period here.

Early Dismissal- Friday, January 8th

On Friday, January 8th, our student day will end at 12:35pm. The afternoon will be used for Parent/ Teacher conferences. Your child's teacher will reach out to schedule a conference time should they have concerns.

Ms. Carrie Covelens

"Carrie has been the anchor of the 6th-grade team at Montgomery for almost 14 years! She is our steadfast and fearless leader, always keeping us on track, organized, and up to speed on the grade level to-do list. When it comes to teaching ELA, Carrie is the epitome of a master teacher and a true professional. Even after many years of teaching ELA, Carrie is continuously fine-tuning her craft. She is passionate about reading, and all it encompasses, which shines bright through her instruction and invigorates her students. Her students are always looking forward to her classes filled with witty humor, squirrel stories, and her endless variety of energizers. However, being a teacher is only one of the many hats Carrie wears. She is a loyal friend with an enormous heart who is always willing to offer a helping hand or the perfect hug. She is a superhero mom to her daughter, Kyla (and her 3 furry children), and loves spending time with her family. She is also a dedicated volunteer at Salfid Rescue, where she fosters dogs until she can find them a forever home. We are certainly thankful to have a remarkable teacher like Ms. Covelens as part of our Montgomery family!"

Mr. Jamie Holloran

"Jamie is one of the most dedicated, supportive, kind guys to work with at Montgomery. I have had the opportunity to work on a team with Jamie for many years now. Never have I seen him in a bad mood or have a negative attitude towards work. Jamie shows up everyday with a positive attitude and is always ready to give 110%. He makes sure he gets to know every one of his students not only on an academic level, but also on a personal level. Jamie is not only dedicated to the students but also to his team members. He is always there to have a quick small group with his grade partners to make sure they understand the science lessons, or to keep them on track with schedules, or just there to listen when they need to vent! Not only is Jamie dedicated to his Montgomery family, but his pride and joy is his own family! He and his loving wife Nicole, have two beautiful daughters who they adore tremendously. They also have a cat, Storm, who they enjoy very much! Jamie and his family are a very close knit family. On the weekends, he can usually be found spending time with his parents, siblings, and all the cousins or coaching one of the girls basketball teams. We are all very lucky to have Jamie in our corner! "

Mrs. Michelle Rand

"There is a saying that goes, “When you want something done well, ask a busy person. This saying applies to our friend and teacher extraordinaire Michelle Rand. When there is a project that needs to be accomplished or an issue to be resolved, Mrs. Rand is the go to person. She thinks of all sides, pros and cons and comes up with a realistic manageable solution. Mrs. Rand has been a teacher at Montgomery since 1990. She is the true definition of a flexible person. Over the last 30 years Mrs. Rand has taught many children in so many different situations that they are too numerous to describe. The common denominator with the children is that she approaches each child as an individual, discovers their strengths and challenges and develops a program for them taking into consideration not only what they need academically but emotionally.

Mrs. Rand is the ultimate team player . She will seek out other professionals, ask questions, discuss goals and information so that she can make educationally based decisions as to what is in the student’s best interest. Mrs. Rand is an amazing friend. There is nothing she will not do for you. All you need to do is ask and even when you don’t she is there. People like her are rare and we feel fortunate to have her in our lives.

Mrs. Rand is an animal lover . She currently has two dogs and has had as many as 7-8 animals in her home at one time. She’s a mom and a wife, loves her soap operas and to read and spends many hours helping her children with their businesses. Mrs. Rand is a well rounded person who shares her wealth of knowledge with us all. She loves her students and would do anything to work towards their success."

Time Capsule

We're bidding farewell to this crazy year with an old-fashioned time capsule buried in our field! Mr. Seidenberger will visit each class between 1/4 and 1/8 to brainstorm an item that represents 2020 to include in the capsule. If your child would like to write a letter to kids of the future about what 2020 has been like for them, please drop it off to the front office by 1/13 to be included in the time capsule. Email Emily Kline at with any questions.

MLK Day Service Projects

In observance of Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr’s birthday, Montgomery will be offering a variety of service project opportunities between Monday, January 11 and Monday, January 25. Students and their families may participate in as many service opportunities as they would like.

Home & School has partnered with The Giving Tree to offer Montgomery students three types of service project ‘kits’ aimed at battling food insecurity and homelessness in our community. These kits will be available for pick up at school beginning January 11, and may be completed and returned to school by January 25.

Additionally, we will be holding clothing drives for two local charities: Dress for Success and The Wardrobe. These organizations provide men and women struggling with economic stability find employment by providing professional attire, support, and the confidence to succeed.
