Developing Brains
Teachers had a great time the end of September at the ACSI teacher convention. They were able to attend seminars of their choice and were challenged by engaging speakers. One speaker I believe we all enjoyed was Julie Adams from Adams Educational Consulting. She recently published a book #FullyCharged. She shared many interesting facts about the brain:
- Brains do not fully develop in girls until the approx. age of 20, while boy brains fully develop around the age of 25.
- "The last part of the brain to develop is the Pre-Frontal Cortex; it controls impulses, organization, moral reasoning, emotional stability, concentration and prioritizing." Did you read that? It's the last part of the brain to develop. Your child may struggle in these areas because their pre-frontal cortex is still developing. Help your child with organization (keep the backpack clean, check it nightly), impulse control, concentration (it's hard to study in front of a TV), prioritizing, etc.
- Kids need 9-13 hours of sleep per night.
- " Information is only stored in short-term memory for about 20 minutes; when information is connected to prior knowledge and emotion, it can be stored in long-term memory." Knowing this, how could you help your child study for a test?
- "Adolescents often do not fully process cause & effect (another skill of the Pre-Frontal Cortex) so they really DO NOT know why they just did something wrong or why they got in trouble for it."
