THE GIVING TREE

Did you know The Giving Tree’s vision is an education without barriers? Aside from our monthly food pantry, we support students and their families with so much more! From school supplies, to our Holiday Store, we know each student and family’s needs are different. We are looking forward to sharing a little more about The Giving Tree each month in conjunction with our food collections.

This month we are collecting canned vegetables. Please feel free to send donations with your students to put in the collections bins/carts near the main office of school. Items can also be dropped off during school hours. The Giving Tree appreciates the community support in helping ensure food is not a barrier to a student’s education.

READING ACTIVITIES

Are you looking for reading activities to use with your reader at home?

Start a Book Club: Form a book club with family members, your child’s friends and their parents, or just the two of you. Select a book together and establish small reading assignments, (for example one or two chapters at a time). Choose a specific “meeting” time, and place such as a weekly trip to a park (during the warmer months) or just chat at home over zoom, discussing the book. Be sure to focus on talking about your ideas and themes in the book, using examples from the book. After you finish one book, pick another book by the same author, about a similar topic or in the same genre and compare them.

Compare Perspectives: Read about an event you and your child attended, or write your own accounts of an event you shared. Read the two pieces and then compare the differences between them and the perspectives from which they were written.

Read and Research: Help your child come up with a question about a topic of interest. Then work together to read a variety of sources to find the answer.

Vary your Reading: Read different genres of texts with your child. For example, pick a poem or play and read it together and talk about the ideas, perspectives and themes of it. Read two poems about one topic and compare them.

ABSENCES

Lineville Intermediate has started to send 10-Day Absence Letters to families. The State allows families to excuse their children from school up to 10 days in a school year. Attendance can be changed at any time with any updated paperwork. If you have any doctor's notes to be turned in, please hand them in or email to: shanpion@hssdschools.org.

Please note this is just to let you know your student is at the 10 days, not that anything will be done at this time. You will be contacted by the teachers, school social worker and counselor if anything is going to happen further. So please do not worry.

Power School Attendance Code Meanings:

EXC - students absence is excused

UNX - students absence is excused, however, exceeds the 10 days

TRU - no one has called in the student for the absence that day
