Last Thursday Open Mic Night
Thursday, September 27th, High School Book Club will host the first Last Thursday Open Mic Night of the school year. The event brings out some of the brightest talents in the school, including freestyle rap, singers, stand-up comedy, improv comedy, dramatic interpretations, and poetry and fiction readings and recitations. Book Club will sell chips, cookies, and drinks for $1 each and proceeds will help purchase club discussion books.
Special Programs Parent Information and Bingo Night
Parents are invited to learn about our Title I, English as a Second Language, Gifted and Talented, and Special Programs offered at the school on Thursday, September 27th, from 5:30 p.m. to 7 p.m. in the cafeteria. All parents, students, and family members are welcome. Bingo and prizes will be available for students and children!
Free Dress Fridays
There will be announced free dress days over the next few Fridays. Attire is T-shirt and jeans only. No obscene images or wording on shirts. Jeans must follow the pants expectations (no rips, tears, joggers, and/or skinny jeans or pants) in the HPS handbook. The proceeds will go towards Seniors’ graduation.
Spirit Shirt Design Voting
There is a competition between art students to design this year’s spirit shirt, and students and staff are invited to vote on their favorite. The options are on display on the glass doors outside the boardroom. You can cast your vote in the voting box below the display. Write your name and the number of the design you want to see on this year’s spirit shirt. Voting ends this Friday, September 28th.
GATE (Gifted and Talented Education) Screening
Referral forms for gifted and talented screenings are available at the front office and on the school’s website. The forms must be returned to the front office by Friday, September 28th. The assessment period will begin on Monday, October 1st.
PSAT Practice Test
A PSAT Practice Test will be held for 9th, 10th, and 11th grade students on Saturday, September 29th, from 9 a.m. to 2 p.m.. Interested students should sign up with their counselors and show up by 8:30 a.m. Saturday morning. Students who attend this event will receive one week of free dress passes! The school will hold official PSAT testing for all 9th grade students on Wednesday, October 10th.
Scholastic Book Fair: October 8th - 12th
The Scholastic Book Fair will be held in the library from Monday, October 8th through the Friday, October 12th. The fair will include several popular titles, like the new Baby-sitters Club graphic novel by Raina Telgemeier, the most recent Star Wars Jedi Academy book, and Miles Morales: Spider-Man by award-winning author Jason Reynolds, which is about the origins of Miles Morales: the new Spider-Man featured in the upcoming movie Spider-Man: Into the Spider-Verse. The fair will also feature posters, bracelets, pencils, headphones, and a variety of other colorful accessories. The book fair will be open from 8 a.m. to 11:10 a.m. and 12:10 p.m. to 4 p.m. and proceeds will help buy new books for the school library.

2018-2019 Athletics:
Volleyball Club: Volleyball club members are now finalized. The club will run until the end of the 1st nine weeks.
Basketball Club: Basketball be played through the 2nd nine weeks and the 3rd nine weeks on Mondays, Tuesdays, and Thursdays from 3:45 - 5 p.m.. All students interested in basketball club will meet in the gym on Friday, October 12th, after school until 3:45 p.m.
Boys and Girls Soccer Teams: Pick up the pre-participation packet from the front office or Coach Fenton; turn in to Coach Fenton by Wednesday, October 10th. Packets must be turned in prior to tryouts. If you have any questions, ask Coach Fenton and Coach Jackson. Soccer tryouts for the girls’ varsity team will be on Thursday, October 11th, and boys’ varsity tryouts will be on Friday, October 12th. Both tryouts will be held at Willow Park.
