Johannes Gutenberg
Johannes Gutenberg was a German blacksmith, goldsmith, printer, and publisher that introduced printing to Europe.
Johannes Gutenberg's movable type
Around 1450, Johannes Gutenberg invented the printing press and independently developed a movable type system in Europe, along with innovations in casting the type based on a matrix and hand molds. The more limited number of characters needed for European languages was an important factor. Gutenberg was the first to create his type pieces from an alloy of lead, tin, and antimony —the same components still used today.
oil-based ink
Among his many contributions to printing are: the invention of a process for mass-producing movable type; the use of oil-based ink; and the use of a wooden printing press similar to the agricultural screw presses of the period.
