Learn All About Them!

What are Fractions

We call the top number the Numerator, it is the number of parts you have.
We call the bottom number the Denominator, it is the number of parts the whole is divided into.

You just have to remember those names! (If you forget just think "Down"-ominator)

The denominator names the number of equal parts into which number 1 has been divided. We read the denominator as an ordinal number. It names which part of number 1.
The numerator, which we read as a cardinal number, names how many of those parts.

Basically fractions are division, they are just written differently. The numerator is the dividend and the denominator is the divisor. The number you divide by

dividend ÷ divisor = quotient Example: in 12 ÷ 3 = 4, 3 is the divisor and 12 is the dividend. So numerator÷denominator=quotient.
