### Learn All About Them!

## What are Fractions

We call the top number the **Numerator**, it is the number of parts you have.

We call the bottom number the **Denominator**, it is the number of parts the whole is divided into.

You just have to remember those names! (If you forget just think "Down"-ominator)

The denominator names the number of *equal parts *into which number 1 has been divided. We read the denominator as an **ordinal number.** It names *which *part of number 1.

The numerator, which we read as a** cardinal number**,

__names__s.

*how many*of those partBasically fractions are division, they are just written differently. The numerator is the dividend and the denominator is the divisor. The number you divide by

dividend ÷ divisor = quotient Example: in**12 ÷ 3 = 4**, 3 is the divisor and 12 is the dividend. So numerator÷denominator=quotient.
