Did you know that while language learning occurs naturally in the brain, learning to read does not? In fact, we need to 'wire' children's brains in order to teach them how to read. This means that we can't just surround children with books and expect them to pick up reading without direct instruction. Luckily, K-3 Marshfield teachers use the Fundations phonics program to explicitly, systematically teach students the 'reading code.' At home, you can support this important work by encouraging your child to say all the sounds, or "tap it out" when they are stuck on a tricky word. We want to discourage children from guessing, skipping words, or looking at the picture to figure out a word.
