How Can We Focus on What Really Matters in 2020?
Last week we began discussing how we can improve some of our habits (as parents, staff and students) that enable us to focus more on what's most important. These are based on Michael Hyatt's book, Free to Focus. We reviewed the need for quality sleep and better eating last week. What else can help us focus better? 3. Moving more. Ugh. Really? Do you have to go there? It feels like exercising always wears us out and saps our energy. In fact, it does the opposite. It replenishes us. It is optimal to work out three to four times a week to get our heart rate up and muscles moving. The CDC reminds us, "You can put yourself at lower risk of dying early by doing at least 150 minutes a week of moderate-intensity aerobic activity." (p. 74) But, what if you are nowhere near those levels of commitment and time? As with anything, literally take the next step. Can you take the stairs instead of the elevator? Can you walk a lap or two or three for five minutes? Can you park a little farther from the door? Can you decide to do 10 reps of an exercise three times? Can you do a little yard work or wash the car (so you can accomplish two things at once)? Can you play with your kids for a few minutes while they are playing outside? What could be your next step? 4. Connecting with others. Who are the people closest to you and what impact do they have on you? VIP's can be very important people who make you laugh and bring joy and life to you. VDP's are very draining people who can suck the life out of you. (Hyatt calls them emotional vampires.) Do others close to you affect your productivity? You bet. One research study at a large tech company noted that "for coworkers who sat within a twenty-five foot radius of high-performers, their performance rose 15%, which amounted to a $1 million improvement toward the bottom line." (p. 76) While we may not always get to choose our coworkers or our family members, we can choose how we respond to them and what boundaries we place on the relationships with them. That is such an easy say and a hard do. We need others who help us be better and get better. We also need to consider if we're helping others do the same. Our children will learn how to take care of their bodies and how to nurture quality relationships from our example as the leaders in their lives. By what they see us do today, what are they really learning? It makes a difference.
