The Happenings of Room 18.

Happy New Year!
I hope that all of you had an amazing winter break with your family! We headed out to California to spend time with my family and it was amazing! We took Elsa to Disneyland for the first time (she loved it!) and also went to Pasadena for the Rose Parade. Pictures do not do those floats justice. Simply amazing!

Curriculum
Reading -
We have started reading the novel, Bud, Not Buddy. The book is set in Flint, Michigan during 1936. The kids and I have talked about the Great Depression a little bit but if you talk to your kiddo about it as well to help give them some context for the book. Bud, is a young African-American boy whose mom died when he was 6. Since then he has been living in foster homes or in an orphanage, but has a plan for finding his father. We have been working on our "thinking marks" as we read. Ask your kiddo what those are!
Writing-
We are just starting our persuasive unit this week. I read a story to the kids called Hey Little Ant. They had to respond whether or not the kid in the story should squish the ant. I apologize in advance, the kids might get really good at persuading you for things!
Math -
We are continuing with Unit 5 in math. The kids have been doing a great job with double digit multiplication. Some kids still need some extra practice at home. Our test is next Wednesday. We will start the study guide on Friday, and then on Tuesday the kids will get to tailor the study time to meet their needs.
Science -
We are working on our animal adaption unit right now. Kids are learning about different adaptations. Later this week we will be doing an opposable thumb activity to help us realize how important our thumb is to us!
Social Studies -
We are learning about the midwest region. Their test is on January 22. They do have their flashcards!
