FALL HOMECOMING EDITION
BRICKIE PRIDE was on full display all week long in classrooms, at sporting events, and even DOWNTOWN!
One sign in particular summed it up at The Librarium Cafe (see photo).
BRICKIE PRIDE is something special - no other team in the world is known as BRICKIES ... and no matter the score of the game, the finish of the race, the result of the meet - we have terrific coaches and student athletes who MAKE US PROUD everyday because of their attitude, effort and dedication to represent the school and this city in the best way possible!

Girls
On Tuesday night, our girls played host to NCC rival Lowell in their only game of the week ... and it truly was a GAME OF THE WEEK!
In a back and forth contest, junior Grace Nestich scored for Hobart and the score was tied 1-1 after 80 minutes of play, which meant OVERTIME! Neither team was able to notch a goal in the first overtime ... so we played another! In the 2nd OT, Lowell scored to take a 2-1 lead and hope was fading ... until a Liesl Martin goal tied it at 2 on an amazing kick that sailed over the outstretched hands of the goalie and into the net! Lowell actually almost scored again in the closing seconds but the shot fortunately caromed off the side of the goal and forced the teams to enter a SHOOTOUT to determine the winner.
After the first round of 5 shots, the two teams were STILL TIED - so they moved onto a SECOND SHOOTOUT. On the last shot of the night for Hobart, sophomore Emma Lewis scored on a shot that snuck past the goalie and into the bottom right side of the net. On the ensuing Lowell shot, freshman Alexandria LaVelle made a thrilling stop and the CELEBRATION began! After playing 2 halves, 2 OT's and 2 shootouts, the Lady Brickies outlasted the Red Devils and picked up a much needed NCC win!
Boys
On Wednesday night, it was our boys turn to face off against the Red Devils down at Lowell. In a very physical contest, the Brickies got a goal from sophomore Avione Lane to take a 1-0 lead ... and a terrific defensive effort by Hobart (and goal keeper Johan Spirolazzi - that's right, his name is Johan) preserved the shut-out and helped our boys secure their first VICTORY of the year! They've been battling and improving every week, getting closer and closer, and to see them out there MAKING IT HAPPEN was AWESOME!
On Saturday, the boys traveled to take on Michigan City for an afternoon tilt. Again, the Bricks battled and entered halftime tied 1-1 with the Duneland Conference team. Unfortunately, on a hot day at the end of a long week, Hobart ran out of gas and lost a very competitive game to the Wolves.
The progress we are seeing in both of our soccer programs is tangible and after such an exciting week of play - the future looks even brighter!!

Boys Tennis
Monday, the Brickies DOMINATED Griffith by the score of 5-0! Sophomore Nick Kolopanis won a 3rd set tie-breaker at #3 singles to preserve the sweep! On a side note ... German exchange student Theo Rudy also won his first JV match of the season!!
On Wednesday, Wheeler proved to be too much for Hobart as the Bearcats returned the favor ... and although each match was hard fought, the final tally ended at 5-0 - advantage, Wheeler.
Thursday afternoon, Hobart faced off with Andrean in an NCC and potential sectional match-up. Playing without #1 singles Evan Kara, Hobart battled the 59ers extremely tough, losing a close match 3-2. Sophomore Max Jancich played up at #1 singles and notched a victory ... and in his first singles action of the season, senior Cannon Briggs secured a 6-0, 6-0 win at #3!
Monday, 9/17, is our boys SENIOR NIGHT against another potential sectional foe - Merrillville.

Football
The Brickie Palooza Homecoming unfortunately turned into a Brickie Pa"loss" as the Andrean 59ers kept our boys out of sync all night and left town with a 41-7 NCC victory. The 59ers jumped out to an early 13-0 lead. Hobart answered with a touchdown run by senior Sal Valle to cut the lead to 13-7 and looked to seize some momentum after a slow start, but Andrean was able to capitalize when it needed to and took a 27-7 lead into halftime. In a back and forth 2nd half, our boys played hard and battled, but a comeback was not in the cards as we just never could quite get it going in the direction we needed it to.
It was a tough night for the Bricks, one where "we got knocked down ... but we'll get up again, they're never gonna keep us down" ... this week we'll get back to WORK WORK WORK to keep improving as we prepare for another NCC match-up next Friday night @ Kankakee Valley.

Cross Country
On Saturday, our boys and girls CC teams competed at the 51st annual New Prairie Invitational - one of the largest Invitationals in the state!
Our Lady Brickies ran a tough race on a hot day at New Prairie ... led by senior Holly Shaginaw (21st) and her twin sister Christina (26th), Hobart ran well and placed 15th overall out of 31 teams in the AAA division! Running against the best that the north half of the state has to offer, this was a GREAT chance for our girls to see how they stack up as the post-season draws near.
Also competing in the varsity race were freshman Sydney Belk, senior Elena Polizotto, junior Mary Bonner, sophomore Lilly Butler, and freshman Paige Solivais.
Boys
On the boys side, Hobart placed 24th overall in the AAA division on the demanding course. Junior Bryan Cherry paced the Brickies in 24th place with a finishing time of 16:59.4! Also scoring for Hobart were the trio of seniors - James Corgan, Logan Reid and Andrew Romes, along with a pair of freshmen - Joe Meagher and Ian Freimuth. Once again, this was a GREAT preview of what's to come as the Brickies continue preparing for a post-season run!
Earning individual medals for their performance for the Brickies were Holly Shaginaw, Christina Shaginaw and Bryan Cherry!
Hobart hopes to see this course one more time this year as they push towards another Semi-State appearance!

Volleyball
Monday @ Whiting, the girls lost a heart-breaking 5 set match to the Oilers,
Tuesday, the Brickies returned home for an NCC tilt against Andrean. Our ladies pushed the 2017 class 2A state champion to the limit in each game, but couldn't quite get over the hump and ultimately lost in 3 games, 19-25, 25-27, and 22-25.
After 2 tough losses to start the week, Hobart traveled to Hammond to face the Morton Governors on Wednesday. The Brickies came out ready to rock-n-roll and DOMINATED Hammond from the start winning in 3 games 25-13, 25-11 and 25-9!
Our girls are currently 9-13 on the season with another BIG week ahead with two games at home (Tuesday vs. Highland & Wednesday vs. Hanover Central) and one on the road (Thursday @ KV).
GOOD LUCK LADIES! #OWNIT
Girls Golf
Ladies playing for the Brickies at the sectional were junior Skye Lipke, sophomore Alivia Ahner, junior Faith Scott, junior Mady Buxbaum, and sophomore Courtney Castrejon.
The girls played well Friday and placed 5th overall out of 11 schools with a team score of 442 - narrowly missing the top 4 by 12 strokes. The top three teams advancing to the Regional competition were Lake Central, Crown Point and Munster.
The IHSAA also allows the top 3 individual scores (on non-advancing teams) to advance to the regional. Hobart junior Skye Lipke, who led the Lady Brickies with a 98, finished in a 3-way tie for the last 2 advancing spots ... which meant, in the immortal words of former Indianapolis Colts coach Jim Mora, PLAYOFFS?
After 2 playoff holes, Skye ultimately was unable to secure a spot advancing her to the regional - but she, along with her teammates, gave an incredible performance and showed a great deal of grit as they OWNED IT this year!
GREAT SEASON LADIES! WE ARE VERY PROUD OF YOU!
