Developing Lifelong Learners Who Grow, Lead and Inspire

Week of April 11, 2016

Lean-In Assessment

We know that he best way to teach our students is to know them as individuals. We learn their "human stories" by spending time with them, listening closely, talking with them and other adults in their lives--and always being open to what we add to their "story" through the experience in our classroom--In my opinion, one of the GREATEST rewards of being a teacher!

Combined with the "human story" is the "learning story" that is also gleaned through observing, asking and listening. Gathering information about how a student learns is the key to personalized learning and can be the avenue by which we add to the student's human story and their opportunity for an equitable education.

  • How does the student approach tasks?
  • What are the student's strengths?
  • What are the struggles the student encounters and how are struggles addressed?

Standardized assessments will not provide quality data on these questions. And, it is the answers to these questions that will guide our responsive next steps in approaching individual student learning. So grab a clipboard and start (or continue) "lean in assessment" to increase your effectiveness as you learn more about your students' individual "learning stories" and your massive impact on continuing to write that learning story with each student.

Jungle Book Jr. Performance

After weeks of practice and preparation, the Southside Drama Club presented Jungle Book Jr. to school and community audiences on Thursday, March 30. It is such a joy to see our students shine in avenues that lead from the classroom. Lines memorized, choral pieces harmonized, solo performances bravely sung by 5th graders... it is like you can SEE confidence being built right there on stage! We must remind ourselves that there are so many ways to build a child into a healthy adult and these experiences certainly add to a strong foundation. Thank you to Kara Clark and Erin Jump who co-directed and Emily Tower who assisted with costumes. GREAT WORK!

Jumprope for Heart Total

Southside students, under the leadership of Sara Fitzpatrick, raised $4,306.97 for the American Heart Association! WOW! The continual message of health and fitness that our students hear from our Southside family encourages them to spread the word and raise funds to make a difference in the future. An amazing effort and outcome.
