A note from PTO
Racer Family,
October 30, 2019
Since our opening, French Elementary has had a dedicated pillar for philanthropy. In past years, we have held fall and spring events aiding our surrounding communities. This fall the PTO has elected to host a winter coat drive with donations benefiting students in Klein.
Providing a winter coat for children may be a daunting expense to those in need but is often the necessity that remains unfulfilled. We are asking French families to donate new and/or gently used coats/jackets November 4-18. Please bring donations to the school and place them in the designated boxes in the rotunda.
The PTO will distribute the winter wear to our French families in need, as well as our fellowship campus, McDougal Elementary (KISD), November 19-22.
French is unique with the humanity, service and commitment we spread to our French families, district and surrounding communities. We celebrate our student’s sense of fulfillment when they are part of our school’s community impact events. With your donation, we will continue to let our light shine by providing a needed resource for EVERY student to stay warm this winter.
In advance, thank you for your donation to support our first winter coat drive.
Sincerely, French PTO
Information from the Music Teachers
5th grade students have been busy preparing for the upcoming Veterans Day Program. Presentations will be at French Elementary, November 14 at 8:45 and 9:45 am for students and 7:00 pm for parents and the community. 5th grade students should arrive by 6:30 pm for the evening performance and report to their music room. All students should dress in patriotic colored shirts with long dark pants or jeans (no shorts please) and comfortable shoes for the program. Girls may wear skirts/dresses or leggings in patriotic colors if desired. Students will dress the same for ALL programs. If your child did not commit to attending the evening program and circumstances have changed, we would love to have them join us for this wonderful Tribute to Veterans.
Book Fair is Coming!
4th and 5th Grade Information from Music Teachers
Recorders
4th and 5th Grade students will again be playing recorders in music class. Students may buy one in the school store for $7.00. If your child has a recorder from another school, there is no need to purchase another instrument. Only students who are in the 4th or 5th grade will be able to purchase a recorder so there will be enough for everyone. Please begin bringing your recorders to music so we can start making music soon!!

Box Tops For Education
French collects Box Tops For Education. Each paper “coupon” is worth 10 cents.
The item code and valid expiration date MUST be visible or it will not be admissible.
Box Tops For Education is also going digital.
Download the BoxTops App
Within two weeks of a store purchase, upload your receipt to the APP for credit for the Box Tops purchases.
Why is the program going digital?
Companies that participate in Box Tops must set money aside to cover EVERY Box Top coupon they have on products. These often have expiration dates several years out. Going digital allows them to know how much money they will pay out, without having to hold on to the money for several years.

Memory books are on sale now at https://www.balfour.com/texas/spring/french-elementary-school

Volunteer Background Check
For the safety of our students, a background check must be done every year to volunteer.
Please go to:
https://www.kleinisd.net/cms/one.aspx?pageId=1995880
Once it comes back approved follow the information provided. You will log into CERVIS and update all your information and select “French” as your group and all the activities you are interested in helping with.
Dads, uncles, grandpas and older brothers can sign up to help with the ”Pit Crew”.
If you have any trouble, contact, Jennifer Houston @ Jennwith31@gmail.com, French Volunteer Coordinator
I want to volunteer! What are my options?
Pit Crew—Provides positive male role models for students and an extra set of eyes and ears to enhance school security. Pit Crew also assists with carline and other teacher and student needs throughout the year.
Hospitality—Assist with teacher luncheons and appreciation events. This includes helping with the decorations, bringing up food items, set-up and serving and tear down.
Subject Support—willing to provide support in specific subjects, can be one on one or small groups.
General Volunteers—Help with anytime that is needed throughout the year.
Library Helpers and Book Fair—Assist the librarian with shelving books. Assist with various book fairs and crafts, called maker spaces.
Room Parents—Help in your student’s classroom and be the “go to” parent for parties and if specific help is needed.
Special Events—Assist in coordinating, planning and organizing fun school wide “family events” during the school year.
Helping Hands—Assist with teacher projects, such as cutting, stapling and sorting.
Community Service—Assist with various community service events that will occur throughout the year. This may include a book drive, food drive and other community service projects.
Hearing and Vision—Help students line up for this and stay quiet as they wait their turn.
Fundraisers—Help prep and plan for a successful Color Run!
Pictures Days—Help students line up and wait quietly for their turn and help fix hair if out of place.
5th grade appreciation—help prep and plan for the end of year 5th grade party and ceremony.
Music Appreciation—This is a puppet show that the district provides to the younger students to introduce different instrument families to the students. You would be a voice of a puppet and follow a script.
Art Appreciation—The District provides artwork and you would lead a small group of students through a scavenger hunt to look at all the pieces in the “mini museum”.
Reading Helpers—Help the K and 1st graders with letters, sight words and reading practice with you one on one.

Car Line Reminders
Students with last names beginning with L through Z are picked up at the back porch. Please do not use cell phones while moving through the carpool line. Please be mindful that we load six cars at one time. Keeping your carpool tag visible helps us load cars more quickly. Once all six are loaded, you will be motioned to move forward. Please do not pull out and around the line. Thank you for your cooperation. If you are late. . . Your student(s) will be waiting for you in the front office. You must sign them out with the front desk.
Thank you for your cooperation and help, as we work to keep all of our Racers safe.
Early Dismissals and Transportation Changes
Additional Safety Reminders
Bike Safety
- Rules of the Road. All bicycle riders should follow the basic rules of the road, which also apply to skateboards, scooters and other non-motorized vehicles:
- Ride on the right, in the same direction as traffic using bike lanes when available.
- Stop and look both ways before entering the street.
- Stop at all intersections, whether marked or unmarked.
- Respect traffic lights and stop signs.
- Before turning, use hand signals and look in every direction.
- Use Your Head. Always wear a bicycle helmet, no matter how short or long the ride.
- Walk your bike to the crossing guard and do not go too fast.
Walker Safety
· Walk on the right of the sidewalk. You are sharing the narrow sidewalk with bikers.
· Make eye contact with the driver before crossing and look both ways.
· Do not use the phone or text when walking, it makes you less aware of traffic and bikers around you.
Absence Reporting & Electronic Gradebook: Skyward is a Wonder!
Good attendance is of prime importance for the educational development of each student. A student should not be absent unless it is absolutely necessary. It is mandatory that written notes be submitted to the Attendance Office within 5 (five) school days of the absence. If the Attendance Office does not receive documentation from the parent or a physician’s office by hand delivery, online, or fax within 5 (five) school days of the absence, the absence will remain unexcused.
We are no longer able to accept emails about student absences. All Klein ISD campuses will accept digital parent notification of absence online through Skyward. To report an absence, please go to Skyward Family Access. When you log in through Skyward, click on "Attendance" and click on "Absence Request" at the top right of the screen. A small dialogue box will appear showing request history. In order to add an absence, click "Add Request". A new dialogue box will open where information about the absence can be entered. The calendar will let you choose the dates in the past/future. A comment box also allows you to describe the nature of the absence. All fields are required. Once you click "Save" the entry is then sent to the attendance office for review and approval. You will be able to check the status of the request to see the outcome. Click HERE for a brief handout on how to report an absence. For more helpful tips on using Skyward, please click here: https://kleinisd.net/cms/one.aspx?pageId=1973215
