ELLs in the Classroom
As we are working with our ELLs this year, remember these strategies...
Do
Provide Visuals
Model Expectations
Provide Wait Time
Allow Group Work
Provide Sentence Stems
Value the Home Language
Have Routines – Embed redundancy in lessons
Provide explicit discussion of Vocabulary
Teach Metacognitive Skills
Consider culturally unique vocabulary
Pre-teach (Frontload) whenever possible
Learn about students’ culture
Allow some scaffolding with the native language
Help students become risk-takers (learn from mistakes)
Don’t
Give only oral directions
Speak too quickly
Show prejudice
Expect students to always work alone
Call on students without giving prior notice
Mistake their lack of language for a lack of intelligence
