Farm/Nature/Superhero Camps!
Several of our incoming kindergartners were able to learn, play, and make focused around farming, nature, and superheroes. They were able to visit the a farm, Lizard Lake, the Humboldt Police Station and the Pocahontas airport. Using the learning kitchen and some areas around the building, students were able to create capes, themed socks, and homemade butter (to name a few). I was able to sample some of the delicious cookies and strawberries they made! Yum!
In the Garden with Mrs. Wigans
We've been busy in the garden all summer!
- 25 students have worked in the garden this summer
- Nearly 252 pounds of produce has been harvested this growing season. This is nearly 40% of what we harvested for the entire growing season in the garden last year.
- 15 GC-B students, and three extra GC-B adult volunteers (thank you Chris and Elisabeth Jones and Jessica Goodenow) helped band over 300 geese during two days of goose banding in northwest Iowa. We helped the DNR finish banding 500 geese within three days-the fastest they have banded geese in the past six years!
- The Humboldt County Fair was a success for the Gilmore City Wolverines 4-H and Clover Kids Clubs! Lily Hoover received an Outstanding Junior Award for her display board on monarchs, and received all blue ribbons for her other horticulture projects from the garden. Graclyn Eastman also received an Outstanding Junior Award for her project on Women's Cancer Bags. Chloe Dickey did well with her indoor projects and her pigs, receiving all blue ribbons. Previous GC-B students, Carter Jensen, Alex Wiemers, and Macy Eastman received blue ribbons for their indoor projects, and saw success with the following livestock areas: horse, goat and beef. Macy received Reserve Champion Cow/Calf Pair, and the honor of Intermediate Showmanship. Olivia and Draven Dickey and Brad Wiemers also exhibited indoor projects in the Clover Kids division. Great job to everyone in 4-H and Clover Kids, and all of those who chose to show in open shows, including the Pet Show and Horticulture Show
- We will be getting honey bees during the 2019-2020 school year thanks to the America's Farmers Grow Rural Education Grant provided by the Bayer Fund! Thanks to all of the community support and farmer nominations. More details to come!!
