Happy New Year!
" A new year. A fresh, clean start! It's like having a big white sheet of paper to draw on! A day full of possibilities!"-Bill Watterson

You may have heard your students or their teachers talk about Habits of Success. So what does that mean and why is it important?
The Habits of Success is a framework for students built on decades of research and learning science. The 16 Habits are social and emotional behaviors and mindsets (such as resilience, social awareness, sense of belonging) that support a student's academic achievement and non-academic well-being. They are organized into 5 sets of building blocks:
healthy development
school readiness
mindsets for self and school
perseverance
independence and sustainability
The Habits of Success are incorporated into the Summit Learning Platform discreetly and addressed daily. By acquiring these habits, our students learn how to navigate challenging life obstacles by exercising a growth mindset and perseverance. The habits associated with healthy development are directly addressed during weekly mentoring sessions. We build on those habits intentionally, focusing on at least one habit for every unit completed. The habit associated with our current reading project, Different Perspectives, addressed empathy/relationship skills, which is the ability to take the perspective of, and immerse oneself in the feelings and experiences of others.
The 16 Habits of Success are the tools to handle even the most difficult situations such as pandemics and remote learning.

Get Active
Remote learning will likely add to the heavy screen use that many students already have. It is critical to dedicate time each day to movement and activity. The great teachers we have at Irving understand that movement is key to effective instruction and learning. Students should receive at least 30-60 minutes of physical activity every day.
Each classroom teacher has a choice board for PE and other activities during the day besides just math and reading. Please take advantage of this opportunity. Coach Hibbs also provides live PE instruction throughout the week. These times should be located on the classroom teacher’s platform page. I would also encourage your students to play outside during the day (if possible)…..they are used to 45 min. of recess each day at school.
