Team 71 ELA News

A note from Mrs. Lessing

Dear Team 71 families,

Welcome to 7th Grade English! I am very excited to start the school year with my new students. We had a great first couple of days together and I am looking forward to learning more about them. I wanted to take this opportunity to introduce a few of the tools we will be working with this year so when the children mention them you will know what they are talking about!

Google Docs

The Bay Shore School District has provided each student with a Google account. The students will be able to use Google Docs to work on their writing. They will write some of their assignments in Google Docs, and I will be able to comment and provide feedback right in the document – no printing needed!

Edmodo is an online site that allows the class to connect and communicate with each other. Questions or polls will be posted by students or me about what we are learning or reading, and the students respond right on the site. There is also an Edmodo app, and if students are allowed they can download it to their personal devices to use.

Quizlet is a learning tools website that we will mostly be using to work on our vocabulary skills. Vocabulary words from the texts we are working on are on the site with definitions, pictures, and sentences. Students can learn them by using online flashcards and games.

Wonderopolis is a great site that provides a “Wonder of the Day” - an interesting question answered each day.

We are fortunate that we have 12 Chromebooks in the classroom that I received through Donors Choose that we will be using this school year. The building also has two sets of iPads that we will be using throughout the year. Students are allowed to use personal devices in the classroom when it is appropriate (ie: using one of these sites, reading a book).

I look forward to meeting all of you at Open House and to having a great year together!

Ways to Stay Connected!

The class has a Twitter account that I post tweets from on a regular basis. It is a great way for families to learn about what we are doing in the classroom and to stay up to date on team and class news. @bsms720 is the class “handle.” You do not need a Twitter account to view the class Twitter page, but if you have a Twitter account you are able to respond and interact with us. If you are interested in learning how to set up a Twitter account for yourself, please let me know and I would be happy to help. You can also follow my Twitter handle - @gless54

Class Website

Another great way to stay up to date on class and team information is to visit my website -
