Learner Profile for May
The learner profile that is being highlighted during the month of May is the character trait of being knowledgeable. Students exhibiting this trait ask questions and learn about many topics. They explore a variety of interests, ideas and concepts.
Language Workshop
We began Unit 5, our inquiry unit, last week. Throughout this unit we will read both fiction and non-fiction texts. In the non-fiction book Speeding Up and Slowing Down, we discovered that the main topic was the concept of motion. We then looked for details within the text that helped us learn more about motion. This week we read the fiction book Going Places. In this story, a character named Maya is an inquirer. There is going to be a go-cart race and every student receives an identical kit to use when building their go-cart. Everyone is precise and exact when following the directions in the kit, except Maya. Her inquisitiveness leads her to build a go-cart that doesn't look or work like anybody else’s go-cart!
Literacy
Math Workshop
We have been working with the concept of base 10, with our focus being on the teen numbers. The students have had a lot of practice with understanding that a teen number is made up of a group of 10 and some 'extras'. Many kindergartners are also applying this concept to larger two digit numbers. In addition, we have begun some of our math end of the year assessments. It has been fun to see how much growth our kindergartners have made since the beginning of the year!
MAP assessment
We're going to the zoo!
May 22nd. The permission slip with more information will be sent home soon. If your child has not had a family member join us on a field trip yet this year, one adult from your family is welcome to join us at the zoo. Adults will be responsible for their own transportation and admission fees to the zoo. There will be a place on the permission slip for you to indicate your interest. In addition, before someone is accepted as a chaperone, there needs to be an approved background check on file with the district. If you have not submitted a background approval yet and you hope to attend the zoo trip, you must submit a background check as soon as possible. It can take up to two weeks for the process to be completed. Please be sure to take care of this right away if you are interested! You can find the secure volunteer link on the home page of the School District of Waukesha website.
High Frequency Words
There are 40 high frequency words that kindergarten students in the School District of Waukesha are expected to be able to read by the end of the school year. Have you checked lately to see how is your child doing? We're nearing the end of the year. Has your child met this goal yet?
To help you practice the words with your child at home we have included the document below. The highlighted words are those we have worked on at school. We will update the list as new words are introduced.
Rose Glen online directory
Another important reason you may want to be included in the directory is to give your child the opportunity to be invited to birthday parties or other gatherings with classmates, since neither the teachers nor the office staff is able to share contact information with you. Hopefully you have already signed up for the family directory. If you have not, please take a few minutes to do so.
