Family Movie Night

Friday, Oct. 5th, 6pm

Hawthorne Gym

Our Hawthorne PTA is showing the movie "Sing" in our gym! This is a FREE event. Students can wear their pajamas and bring a pillow and blanket. Pizza, drinks, and candy will be available for purchase (cash only).

There will be a brief PTA meeting right after the movie gets started, in order to vote on whether the PTA will be supporting the Jefferson Referendum and the D200 Working Together committee, and whether the PTA will be supporting the committee with a financial donation. All registered and paid members of the PTA are eligible to vote.

No School on Monday, October 8th in recognition of Columbus Day.

Math Games Everyone Should Play At Home!

Our Hawthorne Math coach, Mrs. Fitzenreider, would like to share this resource with parents on fun math games to play at home (credit: Blog: Math4Love). Math games are a great way to practice facts, build fluency in math, and have fun together as a family. It's also a fantastic way to prevent math anxiety, since often times we as adults may not have enjoyed math ourselves! Sending a positive message to children that math is important, fun, and manageable promotes a healthy and positive math mindset!

Halloween at Hawthorne

Wednesday, Oct. 31st, 2pm

Hawthorne School Field

Parents are welcome to watch students in All Day Kindergarten through grade 5 parade around the field at 2:00 on October 31st (if it rains, we will parade in the gym, and parents should enter at Door 14). Classroom parties will begin after the parade, at around 2:15 p.m. Students will be dismissed at 3:30 p.m.

A.M. Kindergarten students will parade at 9:45 a.m., and parents can sign in the office and meet in the foyer at Door 1 to watch the parade. The A.M. Kindergarten party will take place after P.E., at 10:30-11:30 a.m.

Only pre-arranged PTA volunteers will be allowed to stay for the parties.

Thirty Million Words: Building a Child's Brain

Tuesday, Nov. 13th, 7pm

Glen Ellyn Public Library, 400 Duane Street, Glen Ellyn

The single most important thing you can do for your child’s future success in life is to talk to them. Dr. Dana Suskind, author and founder of the Thirty Million Words Initiative, explains the power of language and how parents can tune in, talk more, and take turns building a child’s brain. A Q&A and book signing will follow her presentation. Copies of her book, Thirty Million Words: Building a Child’s Brain will be available for purchase. Educators who attend can request one free CPDU credit. Register for this free event here.

This event is co-sponsored by Glenbard Early Childhood Collaborative, Westminster Preschool, Glenbard Parent Series, and the Glen Ellyn Public Library.

We have two after school workshops for creating pieces on Wednesday the 10th and 17th from 3:45pm-4:45pm (no sign up required).

Charleston Wrap Fundraiser

Thank you so much for your recent support of our annual Run A Thon - it was a beautiful day to run for our school. Once all envelopes have been returned to school, we will let you know if we reached our $4,600 goal. In the meantime, we have begun our second big fundraising campaign of the year, Charleston Wrap, and we're asking for your help once again. Please remember that raising funds for any PTA campaign is completely optional for our families, help as little or as much as you see fit. Also please know that if you can't donate financially, we welcome any amount of time that you can donate to a committee, club, or event that the PTA sponsors.

That being said, with the funds we raise this year our students can look forward to:

  • Class Field Trips
  • Mr Lee the Science Guy in all classrooms this spring
  • Dreambox subscriptions to assist with math fluency in grades K-2

These three items alone cost $10,000 and represent a small portion of the benefits the PTA provides to our children. Through our fundraising efforts, we hope to raise enough to cover these activities and many others!

If you can, please reach out to your friends and family and encourage them to shop for products in the Charleston catalog. The proceeds of every purchase will make a big difference. Our PTA earns 40% back on every order! There’s a lot of great stuff in this year’s catalog; with over 1,500 great products you can be confident that everyone you know will find something they like.

This sale only lasts until October 15! You can do these quick, easy things today to get our momentum going!

  1. Register your student online by clicking here enter our School ID [z- 15960]
  2. Invite friends and family to shop and support our students.
  3. Look out for the catalog packets that came home recently.

Thank you for your support!

Tony Castrovillari, VP Fundraising and Kristin Lanzisera, PTA President

Jefferson Early Childhood Referendum Information

There will be a question on the November ballot regarding building a new early childhood center in district 200. The question will read: "Shall the Board of Education of Wheaton Warrenville Community Unit School District Number 200, DuPage County, Illinois, build and equip a new early childhood center without levying a separate, special property tax to finance the costs thereof?"

For information on this referendum, please visit the Referendum Information page on the district website. This is a referendum that is asking the community permission to build the facility with no tax increase. Information on just the facts can be found here. The next Listening Town Hall session will be Saturday, October 13th at 10:00 a.m. at Wheaton Warrenville South High School.

Halloween Candy for Heroes 2018

Wheaton North High School’s student led volunteer club SSMS (Students Supporting Military Services) conducts an annual candy drive and needs your help! A candy collection drive will be held Thursday, November 1st through Monday November 5th. Please send any leftover candy you would be willing to donate to the Hawthorne Office (or you can bring it directly to Wheaton North) and it will be sent to our currently serving troops overseas. All of the candy is sent through Operation Freedom. Last year, with the help of students from elementary, middle, and high schools in District 200, over 800 pounds of candy was sent to our Heroes. The goal is to beat that number this year! Thank you in advance for your participation!

School Lunches

Did you know we have a hot lunch program at Hawthorne School? A lunch costs $2.75, and two hot entree options are provided each day, along with several cold options daily, such as salads and sandwiches. There is also a fresh fruit and vegetable bar where students serve themselves, and students can purchase white or chocolate milk. Milk is included in the price of the full meal, but can also be purchased separately, and costs 50 cents.

Our lunch program is a great option for those busy mornings when you may not have time to pack a lunch. Please know that if your child doesn't have a lunch, we will always provide one for her/him through our hot lunch program at school.

We use a cashless system for our hot lunch program. All students have a lunch card, and you can load money onto your child's card using the My School Bucks online system, or by sending cash or check to school, payable to CUSD 200. If you prefer that your child does not have a lunch card, please let us know, and we can pull the lunch card from the class stack. Please contact our school office if you would like us to remove your child's lunch card.

Rent the Hawthorne Sign - Your Kids Will Love It!

Celebrate your child’s birthday in a big way! Wish him/her a Happy Birthday on the Hawthorne School sign. Rent it for their big day and let them see their name in big letters and lights! Cost is $20 for your first child and $10 for subsequent children. Another great way to support the PTA!
