Career Discussion Opportunity
Otsego Community -
We are excited to offer new and innovative experiences for our junior high and high school students. We are inviting professionals such as yourself to come interact with our students as an opportunity to engage them in real-world work experiences through the eyes of an expert. This will be a forty minute experience for our students in which you can present information that would be beneficial as they begin to explore their career options. Things to consider during the presentation would be educational requirements, expectations as they enter the workforce, experiences they can anticipate in your career field. What we are aiming for are real conversations between working adults and our students.
We are so excited to share our students with you so that you might be able to inspire a few and not only educate students about their career interests but to also maybe inspire them to follow your career path!
We want to give our students an idea of what your job entails, but also to tell them how you got to where you are. What the future job market looks like? What certifications and credentials are needed? I have included below a list of suggested essential questions that can be used to guide your discussions but please do not think that you are limited to these. The groups will be smaller in size.
Sample questions that may be asked by students:
Describe your typical workday and workweek. Is it 40 hours? More?
What skills are most important to you in your work?
What interests did you have which led you to this field of work?
What education, training, certification, licensure, advanced degrees or credentials do you need to do your work?
What employment path did you take that led you to where you are now?
What is the employment outlook for your line of work?
What challenges do you face in your work?
We have put a calendar together for you to choose a date that works best for you. You may choose to talk to Junior High Students (grades 6-8) or High School Students (grades 9-12).
Simply click on the building below that you would like to share your experiences with and select a date that fits in your schedule. You will enter in the front of the High School and someone from the office will walk you down to the room.

COMMUNITY EVENTS SECTION
I would let you and your students know that free demonstrations on how to carve and paint hunting-style decoys, shorebirds, and songbirds, and an opportunity for kids to paint duck head silhouettes are just some of the activities to be offered by our non-profit Ohio Decoy Collectors and Carvers Association, the Maumee Bay Carvers, and the Wood County Park District on Saturday, Nov. 17, 2018. We will also be providing information on the Ohio Federal Junior Duck Stamp Contest, a state wide contest for students in grade 1 through 12.
This family-friendly event will be held 1pm to 4pm at the Otsego Park Shelter house (Thompson Stone Hall), located at 20000 West River Rd. overlooking the Maumee River, at the intersection of St. Rt. 65 at St. Rt. 235, just east of Grand Rapids, Ohio.
Visitors also will find a display of vintage decoys and wildfowl carvings. Our focus is to encourage people to put down their cell phones and computers, to get outside and observe nature, and make things by hand, one-at a time.
Grand Rapids Arts Council Events
Gingerbread Houses
The Grand Rapids Arts Council is sponsoring a special event for children during the Village’s Christmas Open House in the village. On Saturday, November 17, 2018, children are invited to make gingerbread houses in the Old Fire Station from noon – 2 p.m. There is no cost for this fun activity, and the gingerbread houses and all supplies will be included. Cookies and hot chocolate will be served. We invite you to exercise your creativity to start off your Christmas season!
Silent Movie
The Grand Rapids Arts Council is sponsoring a silent movie during the Christmas Open House in Grand Rapids, Ohio. It will be presented in the Historic Grand Rapids Town Hall at 7:00 p.m. on Saturday, November 17th.
City Lights, the most cherished film by Charlie Chaplin, is also his ultimate Little Tramp chronicle. Chaplin plays a hapless but resilient tramp who falls in love with a blind flower girl on the tough city streets. Upon learning that she and her grandmother are to be evicted from their home, the tramp undertakes a series of attempts to provide them with the money they need, all of which end in humiliating failure. But after a drunken millionaire lavishly rewards him for saving his life, the tramp can change the flower girl’s life forever. The result was the epitome of Chaplin’s art and the crowning achievement of silent comedy. In 2007, the American Film Institute ranked it 11th on its list of the best American films ever made.
The movie will be accompanied by Lynne Long on piano. She has a real knack for slipping show tunes, classical selections, and anything else she can think of into these movies, and she has a fun time doing it.
Admission is by donation to the Grand Rapids Arts Council. People of all ages will enjoy this timeless classic!
