Did you know that Michigan has adopted new standards for social studies? The updated social studies standards were finally adopted in June of this year after a lengthy process.
Last week, our 4th graders travelled to Lansing for their annual visit to the Capitol and the Hall of Justice. While there, they had the opportunity to participate in government, by protesting the Governor's line item veto of charter school funding. This is supported in the Michigan Academic Standards for social studies.
UPDATE FROM THE ACCOUNTING DEPARTMENT
As many of you know, Governor Whitmer used a line-item veto on September 30th to negate the $240 per pupil State Aid increase for all charter school students for the current school year. If her veto is approved, this will obviously have a major negative financial impact on the state’s nearly 300 charter schools and 150,000 students.
Our fiscal year began on July 1st, and we are now four months into our school’s budget. We are definitely hoping for an override of this unjust political action. Both the House and the Senate have introduced bills to bring back $256 million into the State’s Fiscal Year 2020 budget - included in these bills is the $35 million for charter school funding.
The Democratic governor and the Republican-led legislature have been unable to reach a consensus. However, Governor Whitmer’s decision to use the line-item veto to deny charter school students the standard funding increase is unacceptable. Our Husky students deserve the same per-pupil funding increase as the traditional public school students. Please continue to make calls to advocate for a repeal of the line-item veto:
Governor Gretchen Whitmer: 517 373-3400
Senator Ruth Johnson: 517 373-1636
