Capturing Kids' Hearts - Creating a Culture of Connectedness
An unconventional start to the school year, USD 428 teachers went "back to school" themselves for two days of Capturing Kids' Hearts training upon their return in August.
"We've prioritized the social-emotional learning of students for several years," said Tricia Reiser, director of teaching and learning for USD 428, "but until now, we didn't have a common set of tools, strategies, or resources available to unify teachers efforts across the district. Capturing Kids' Hearts changes everything."
The two days of experiential training and expert coaching saw teachers engaged and energized in new ways. Teachers left the training with first-hand experience and resources to explore with fellow teachers or as a building.
Time to implement!
As the school year gets underway, common strategies are being used across USD 428 to build relationships, establish expectations, and start the year on a positive note. Starting with "Rock, Paper, Scissor" championships to the more intentional task of developing social contacts with students, teachers now have a tool kit available to help implement the evidence-based processes.
Stay tuned for more!
USD 428 is only beginning the journey with Capturing Kids’ Hearts. Updates will be provided throughout the year as we chronicle developments and progress.
"Students are more likely to engage in healthy behaviors and succeed academically when they feel connected to school." - CDC Report on School Connectedness

Recognize an outstanding first-year teacher
The Kansas Horizon Award program identifies and recognizes representatives of excellent teaching in the elementary and secondary classrooms of the state. The mission of the program is to recognize exemplary first-year teachers who perform in a way that distinguishes them as outstanding.
From local nominations, USD 428 will select one elementary and one secondary teacher to be recognized. Selected teachers will then be invited to complete an application for the state-wide, Horizon Award recognition program. Nominees should be starting their second year teaching, having successfully completed their first year during the 20-21 school year.
Click Here to nominate a teacher before September 8, 2021.
