WEEKLY WONDERS
Charles Ellis Montessori Academy, Week of October 31st, 2022
"Education cannot be effective unless it helps a child to open up himself to life." -Dr. Maria Montessori
Erdkinder (7th and 8th grade) students will spend time outdoors learning lessons and doing a variety of activities at Oatland on Fridays. Their work will continue throughout the school year until the culminating event at which they will volunteer their energy and time. You will be able to see their hard work and efforts at the Child in Nature (Fairy and Gnome Festival) event in the spring.
Last week, Erdkinder students learned all about maritime forests and they created "Jack of the Wood" art on the trees.

Grace & Courtesy Emphasis
Throughout the school year, Ellis has a school-wide focus on specific positive character traits. Each teacher may choose to highlight these "Grace & Courtesy" emphases differently, but as a school we follow a general common curriculum.
From October 31st-November 18th, our school-wide Grace & Courtesy emphasis is FORGIVENESS.
The language for identifying/naming FORGIVENESS in "The Self-Awakened Child" series by Jonathan Wolff:
- When I make a mistake and say to myself, "It's OK to make a mistake. I will try to do better the next time, " I am Forgiving myself.
- When I make a mistake and say to someone who feels sad or angry at me for what I did, "I'm sorry. Is there something I can do to help make it right?" I am helping the other person to Forgive me.
- When someone hurts my feelings or does something that makes me feel sad or angry, I am practicing Forgiveness when I say to them, "I felt hurt and angry by what you said and did. Maybe what you did was an accident. If I did anything that caused you to hurt my feelings, I'm sorry and I will try to do better. I hope you feel better soon." Then I let me hurt and angry feelings go away.

Counselors' Corner
This week in School Counseling, Erdkinder students began a career assessment using YouScience, logging in from their PowerSchool portal.
Upper Elementary received a practical lesson on kindness, coming up with specific ideas on how to be kind to others, and to ourselves.
Lower Elementary has been reading Stand Tall, Molly Lou Melon, and learning how to be better advocates for ourselves, as well as how to use I-messages to express ourselves.
Next week, Primary classes will begin lessons on Safer, Smarter Kids with the leadership of prevention educators from Mary's Place of the Coastal Empire.
We thank you for your support of our comprehensive school counseling program!
