Pinkerton Patch
What is happening in the Pinkerton Patch?
A Big Thank You!
A big thank you to our Pinkerton parents and learners for preparing our garden beds for spring planting. Each new planting season requires the removal of plants and weeds to prepare the soil for new plants. We appreciate our wonderful volunteers that clear the path for new garden growth!
Hoping for a large crop of potatoes.
A beautiful day for the clean up!
I think I can see strawberries under all this grass!

Planting potatoes for the First Grade Farmers Market.
Does the Caffeine in Coffee Affect Plant Growth?
A fourth grader at Pinkerton is conducting an experiment in the Pinkerton Patch. He is investigating how coffee grounds affects plant growth. Ian designed an experiment using coffee because of a question he posed during a 4th grade inquiry unit. Ian helps maintain the Pinkerton Patch compost system and observed that coffee grounds were used as a source of nitrogen in the compost piles. He wondered, "If coffee grounds are used as a nitrogen source for composting, how would plants be affected by coffee grounds applied directly to the soil? Be watching for the outcome of Ian's experimentation!
A great setting for the experiment.
Applying coffee to one of the experiment barrels.
What observations can be made?
REAL School Garden Lessons
Pinkerton teachers are at it again. On Monday February 26th, Real School garden coach Sammy Wren modeled lessons in the garden for our Pinkerton teachers. Sharing the Planet and How the World Works are the units of exploration being discussed. The units of study involved learning about plants and animals and the environments in which they thrive or perish.
First Graders in Mrs. Irland's class learn how plants and animals are interdependent.
Kindergarteners in Mrs. Trevathan's class learn about patterns in the sky.
5th graders in Ms. Baker's class learn about the connections of the food web in an ecosystem.
