Alerts and Information

This past week we experienced our first inclement weather eLearning day as well as our first two-hour delay of the school year, which gives us an opportunity to remind everyone about how to make sure you have access to the most recent updates and information when weather events happen.

Communication about school delays and cancellations is initially shared via a ParentSquare call/text/message from the Scott 2 Central Office.

On eLearning days the Google meet schedule is then shared with parents via a ParentSquare text/message from SMS and shared with students via a Canvas message.

Parents - Please make sure you have accepted the ParentSquare invitation (and check ParentSquare regularly if you have your notifications turned off).

Students - Please make sure you check your Canvas inbox when we have an eLearning day.

Builders Club Induction Ceremony

In just a few days we will celebrate the tenth anniversary of the SMS Builders Club, which organizes and participates in various service opportunities in our community.

Last Tuesday they held their annual induction ceremony to recognize this year's officers as well as all club members.

Thank you to the SMS Builders Club sponsor (Mrs. Boley), the LES K-Kids sponsor (Mrs. Willett), the SHS Key Club reps (Isabella Cox, Emma Johanningsmeier, and Kathryn Montgomery), and Kiwanis rep (Mr. Riggle) for attending and supporting the SMS Builders Club during the ceremony.

Reminders for Walkers

SMS students who walk to and from school:

Please be careful when crossing the streets, utilize sidewalks and crosswalks when available, and follow the street crossing signs.

Also, be sure that you are a positive representative of SMS when you are in the community.

Also, as Officer Nicholson reminded you during his classroom visits, be sure that you are aware of your surroundings, including traffic, at all times.

Student Handbook Update

The Scottsburg MS student handbook contains some significant updates for the 2022-2023 school year. The most significant changes took place in the discipline section.

Here are the highlights of three changes that will impact the largest number of students:

  • Cell phones are still not allowed to be used during the school day here at SMS. Phones are expected to be turned off and stored in lockers. Students who are carrying a cell phone or using a cell phone during the school day are in violation. The consequences for each situation are outlined in the handbook.

  • Second is illegal substances. This year students who have illegal substances and/or paraphernalia (most common examples are vapes, cigarettes, or alcohol) will be recommended for expulsion on the first offense.

  • In an attempt to be more aligned with the high school discipline policy, we will be following a progressive discipline approach. This means that when a student commits the same offense multiple times, the discipline will get progressively more serious. Each example is outlined in the doc that is provided by clicking on the picture above or via the link below.

We encourage you to read the handbook with your child(ren) and to contact us with any questions you may have.

We are looking forward to working with our students and their parents throughout the upcoming school year.
