A Message from the Principal
Northern Elementary School News
Winter Greetings!
Winter finally found us, and it sure had a grip on things. We spent all of last week indoors for morning and lunchtime recess; it made for a lot of unusual energy inside the building. I bet you noticed the extra energy at home as well. Looking at the forecast, we will be outside again for the foreseeable future. It's a relief for all!
Please label winter gear with names whenever you can. If tags or a lighter spot for writing are not available, I have seen clever ideas like tying a ribbon, old key chain, etc to a zipper tie or something that helps us distinguish your child's item when we help them search the lost and found. Our cabinet for lost and found is overflowing! I wish it were not so.
We loved seeing students sporting their spiritwear on Friday! If you could, please take a moment and label that gear if you are able to as well. We have 130 adorable and identical Northern hats to help keep track of. It's a great problem to have.
Later in this message, I have included a graphic that describes an option for helping your child at home and building their skills as a reader. We continue to monitor every child's progress, and we continue to be impressed with all the growth we are seeing. We are also very intentional when we don't see the growth we should. You can expect your child's teacher, an interventionist, or me to reach out if we notice slower than expected growth for your child. We want you to have the information and the opportunity to ask questions and get tools to support your child at home. My life's work is to assure your child is well-prepared for the future they dream of. It's never too early or too often to think about that.
I continue to be so grateful for your partnership. Northern Elementary is filled with dedicated educators and enthusiastic students. It truly is a great place to learn and grow!

GLOWING ABOUT GOOD ATTENDANCE!
Please join us for our glow dance on Thursday, February 1st from 6-7pm in the gym. K-3 students attending Northern Elementary are invited.
Glow sticks will be provided but you are welcome to bring extra if you wish.
Due to safety reasons (a dark gym and lots of bodies) we cannot accommodate siblings that do not attend Northern.
Safety Considerations
- Running in the gym is not allowed. It will be mostly dark, and running is not a safe way to enjoy this activity.
- Food and beverages will not be served and will not be allowed in the gym.
- Adults must remain at school with their child, we will not be able to offer this as a drop off activity.
- Dry tennis shoes should be worn in the gym. Please wear your boots and then change into your dry tennis shoes once you are inside school. We need to prevent water on the floor.
SCHOOL ATTENDANCE MATTERS!
E-LEARNING PLANS FOR SCHOOL CLOSURES
Northern Elementary School
We encourage each family to be actively involved in their child’s education. Support comes in many ways. Families and caregivers can become active with our parent teacher organization, volunteer in the classroom, or simply designate a special time each night to talk about your child’s day and spend 15 minutes reading together.
