Curriculum Corner
Writing
We have learned a lot about narrative writing this year! This week, students will apply what they have learned to write their own narratives. We will take these through the editing and publishing process before the end of the quarter.
Reading
This week, we will continue reading The Tiger Rising. While we read, we will continue focusing on characters. Some specific skills we will practice will include noticing author's precise language, understanding that characters can become complicated (maybe a character was mean but you find something out that makes you feel bad for him), and that it can be fun and beneficial to debate books with friends.
We will continue working on Unit 1 in Reach for Reading as well. We will switch from nonfiction to fiction this week as we read Martina the Beautiful Cockroach. We will focus on the rise and fall of the plot and identifying the beginning, middle, and end of a story.
Language Arts
Wordly Wise: We will continue Unit 3 this week. 3C & 3D will be due on Thursday. The Unit 3 test will be on Friday, 9/30.
Words Their Way: We will continue splitting into our small groups for spelling this week. Tic-Tac-Toe activities will be due on Friday, which will also be their quiz day.
Grammar: The kids did a great job remembering how to identify common and proper nouns last week. We will continue working with nouns this week as we practice with singular and plural nouns.
Math
This week in math, we will spend Monday reviewing for Tuesday's test. We will not have math on Wednesday due to Jog-A-Thon. We will do Khan Academy on Thursday and will do some challenge questions on Friday to work on problem solving skills.
Science
We will be kicking off our science fair projects this week! I will be putting the students into groups of 4 and will give them time to select project topics this week. By the end of the week, students may be asking you to send in some materials for their projects. Each group will be creating a science fair board. If you could send in $1, that will cover the cost of the board.

Jog-A-Thon
- T-shirts will be here this week. Each student will receive a shirt to wear on Wednesday. After Jog-A-Thon is over, please keep this shirt! Students will be asked to wear these again for other field trips and events this year.
- There are still some volunteer slots open if you are available to help:
- Pledge forms and money are due by October 7. Our goal is for each student to raise $50! Our PTO does a wonderful job of using that money to buy materials for the classroom.
