World Read Aloud Week- One School, One Book!
Throughout the week, the children will enjoy a variety of special activities. We will talk about the book in our Community Circles, meet the author of the book through a virtual author visit, drop everything and read as a school community, and celebrate together with a special assembly at the end of the week. We will enjoy themed activities around the book and raffle off some fun prizes at the end of the week for those that participate in our optional activity.
We value reading at Reynolds School and hope that this week will inspire our children and strengthen their love of literature. A special thank you to our Co-Chairs Mrs. Cucci and Ms. Titunick and the entire committee: Mrs. Levitt, Mrs. Jarvis, Mrs. Baker, Ms. Bunting, Mrs. Vaughan, Ms. Welch, Ms. Thies, Ms. Squiccimarri, Ms. Dobrinski, Mrs. Dolan, Mrs. King, Mrs. Zeccardi and Mrs. D'Ambola. We are so lucky to have such a special group of teachers that went above and beyond to plan an exciting and motivational week for our school community!
Be on the lookout for communication throughout the week about our exciting reading adventures! We hope that all of our Reynolds Families enjoy reading with us during the week!
Kids Heart Challenge
Reynolds School will participate in the Kids Heart Challenge during the week of February 14th. Mr. Walis and Mr. Ramirez have been working with the American Heart Association to bring this exciting event to Reynolds School for the fifth year. All Reynolds students will be participating in various jump rope and jumping activities during their physical education class throughout this week. Please remember to wear red and bring sneakers on your P.E. day. The program teaches heart healthy habits and helps the American Heart Association raise money for heart research and education. If you would like to donate, please click here. Any amount is greatly appreciated.
Time for a Check-Up!
Rocket Day
We had a special activity for January’s Rocket Day! In honor of the new year, 2022, classes walked around the school, with our winter hats, trying to find 22 hidden snowflakes. Some of the snowflakes had some very sneaky hiding spots, and there was even a bonus one to find. The students enjoyed this special school wide activity.
Sign Language in Second Grade
All second graders were treated to a special lesson on sign language. Mia Schaffer, a student from Northern Highlands, visited all of our second grade classes during the month of January and taught the students how to sign some new words. It was a rewarding experience for all involved! A special thank you to Mia Schaffer for sharing her learning and passion for sign language with our students.
A Reflection from Ms. Schaffer:
As a student I always struggled with learning a new language. When I started at Northern Highlands and found out I could take sign language as my language I was very interested in trying it. It’s a very visual language and I liked it immediately. Coming to Reynolds to talk to the second graders was an amazing experience. The students were very excited and interested in sign language. I connected with the students immediately. I was so impressed with how quickly they learned the signs that I taught them and how well they were able to sign them. They asked great questions that allowed me to teach them extra signs that I hadn’t even planned for. I hope they remain interested in sign language and consider taking it when they get to high school. I hope to come back to Reynolds and introduce sign language to other grades.
Enrichment Activities in the STEM Lab
We have been doing so many exciting enrichment activities with all Reynolds students in our STEM Lab. Kindergarten students have been learning about divergent thinking and using this creative skill to generate different ideas. First Grade students have launched into their study of littleBits, which are electronic modules, similar to Legos. Students are experimenting with these modules to create different circuits that do a myriad of functions. Our Second Grade students have just applied their understanding of Solids from their recent Science unit to build structures that support the most amount of weight. Our students are learning all about the Engineering Design process as they work through these stages in different challenges.
This month, students will utilize their Enrichment time to tackle challenges based on our World Read Aloud book theme. Kindergarten and First grade students will brainstorm potential problems with the new amusement park and will design and build a model robot that possesses a special skill to solve a park problem. Second graders will brainstorm new ideas for rides and will build models of their inventions. We’re excited to see what our Reynolds students will create!
