Third Grade News from Mrs. C
Jan. 12-16th
Tidbits From the Teacher
We had some exciting times around here last week when the news came to look at our gardens for a story on helping the homeless. We also harvested the last of our lettuce so now we wait on more kale, brussel sprouts, and artichokes. We are taking the STAAR release test at the end of the month so please don't schedule appointments on those days.

What We're Studying and Learning...
Reading: This week we are studying cause and effect in expository text (non-fiction). We'll be looking for signal words that indicate cause and effect relationships.
Writing: We are working on a poetry unit. We're exploring a variety of types of poems and trying our hand at writing similarly structured poems. This week we're looking at diamantes, cinquains, lyrical and narrative poems. Use Poetry Glossary to help you!
I am also meeting with each student to set new writing goals based upon last nine week's work. We'll be looking at punctuation, capitalization (editing) and skill (revising) goals.
Grammar/Spelling/Handwriting: We will focus on writing our names in cursive and spelling rules in the classroom this week. Grammar covers a variety of topics right now.
Math: Students are working on multiplication strategies for x6 and x9 this week. We're problem solving and trying to use more of our multiplication strategies to solve problems since it's more efficient at this point in the year than adding or subtracting alone.
Social Studies/Science: We are deep into researching a famous person in partners or independently. Students have a graphic organizer to catch the important information and they will use a rubric to create a way to share the information with the class. Students will be graded upon completion, sharing facts, and speaking.
