Leapin' Lizards...It's February!
February 1, 2020
Leapin' Lizards
Why do we need them?
A leap year occurs every four years to help synchronize the calendar year with the solar year (the length of time it takes the earth to complete its orbit around the sun), which is about 365 ¼ days. However, the length of the solar year is slightly less than 365 ¼ days...by about 11 minutes. To compensate for this, leap year is omitted three times every four hundred years. GOING GREEN
The February 1st mini-GREEN FAIR and FILM FEST has been coordinated by the LHS Green Action Team, whose mission is to inform the public about accurate recycling practices as well as alternatives to recycling such as up-cycling. From 11:30 a.m. - 1:00 p.m., there will be a selection of family- and child-friendly games and activities. At the conclusion of the mini-fair, guests will be invited to the LHS library for a viewing of The Biggest Little Farm - a film about integrative regenerate farming practices. There will be a brief post-film discussion. For adults who wish to stay for the film and who have small children who may not be interested, complimentary babysitting will be available.

Can you Brave the Shave?
LHS is once again forming a team to raise money for the St. Baldrick's Foundation. This is a huge event in our community, with every school and many sports teams represented each year. Our very own principal, David Adam, has his head shaved every year...after a rousing bagpipe performance of course! Think you can "brave the shave?" Check out the flyer below for information on joining our team, making a donation, or volunteering for the event! If you have any questions, please see Ms. Tziarri or contact her at stziarri@ltps.org.

A special commendation goes to Stephen Pachucki who earned three medals at Regionals and is only the 2nd LHS student to reach this achievement! The team’s success earned LHS a guaranteed spot at the Science Olympiad State Championship in March. Congrats to every member of the team, as well as their advisor, Ms. Gwenn Andahazy, for their hard work and dedication!
Marissa's Mission
Senior Marissa Parker, one of the officers for the LHS Operation Smile Club, was chosen to go on a medical mission to Guatemala City, Guatemala from September 27th to October 4th, where she served as a student educator, teaching locals about basic health care safety such as hand-washing, brushing teeth, hands-only CPR, and nutrition. Despite the language barrier, she and her student partners were able to use translators to communicate with the locals and share these important lessons with them to help them prevent illnesses and injuries.
Marissa also worked with child patients and helped lower the stress of surgery for the children and their families, while making new friends in the process. She also had the opportunity to observe an entire bilateral cleft lip surgery.
This mission further solidified her plan to go into nursing because of the need for medical care around the world. She described the experience as "life changing," and one that reminded her that medical care that would be much more easily accessible in the United States is a privilege that many others don't receive.
Music Man
Junior Miguel Ramirez represented the LHS Choirs at the Central Jersey Music Educators Association (CJMEA) Honors Choir Concert this past weekend. At his audition, Miguel was the highest scoring Tenor 2 in the region, and was awarded the honor of opening the concert with The Star-Spangled Banner!
Two LTPS string players successfully auditioned and were accepted into the CJMEA Symphonic Orchestra!
We are the Champions
The LHS diving team are the 2020 Mercer County Tournament Diving Champions! Senior Ola Kwasniewski was the girls champion, while junior Kerstyn Johnson took second place. Freshman Thomas Carpinelli placed third in the boys division. Congratulations to all of the divers, as well their advisor, Sabrina Lucchesi.
L-R: Kerstyn Johnson, Ola Kwasniewski, Thomas Carpinelli, Dylan Morris, Lilah Howe, and Charlotte Hunter
LTPS Named State District of Character
Our District Character Education Committee most recently submitted our reevaluation application for District of Character recognition. A team of administrators and staff worked together to address each of the 11 principles using our past application, feedback for growth and our present practices in place. We have received word that we have received the status of State District of Character! The process does not stop here as we now go on to the process of National evaluation. This recognition will be announced in May.
Special thanks to our phenomenal team, all of whom were instrumental in gathering data and artifacts for our application. These members include Jessica Deak, Victoria Hart, Corinne Rutt, Patricia Burns and Adrienne Wasserleben.
