The J-Hawk Experience!
Info you need to know for week of January 7 -11!
Message from the principal
As we return from our winter break, I wanted to welcome everyone back from what I hope was a restful and enjoyable time. New this year from recent years, we will be finishing 1st semester at UHS after our winter break. Students will have the same I.E.S. session on Monday and Tuesday this week that they had on Friday, December 21st. That session they are signed up for can be found when they login to FlexiSCHED or in their school email.
We will have one full week of classes this week and then one more day of regular class on Monday, January 14th, before we start our semester finals. We find that it is important to schedule time for teachers to assess students learning in a summative fashion through semester final exams on the last three days of the semester on January 15th, 16th, and 17th (see schedule below). There will be no school for students but a teacher workday on Friday, January 18th.
Teachers can assess student learning in their finals in a variety of methods (test, project, presentation, etc). If they have not shared with students yet, teachers will be sharing this week about their final exam format in their classes. Below are expectations during finals days. "Seminar time" is intended for students who need to make up learning and/or other assessments with teachers during semester finals days. Due to all students having lunch at the same time and not being able to accommodate all students at once, all students will have the opportunity to have open campus lunch during finals days, meaning they can leave campus and then return for their next final.
Expectations:
- Students are required to be in attendance for ALL of their scheduled classes.
- PE classes will be a Day 1 (juniors and seniors) during finals days.
- Students are not required to come to Learning Centers during finals days. • Students will remain in their testing areas the entire testing period.
- All students must be in supervised areas of the building or must leave campus. Those supervised areas include the UHS Library Media Center or the lunchroom.
- Lunch will be available at UHS during each day of semester examinations.

Therapy pets during finals
UHS counselors are excited to once again team with the Animal Rescue League of Iowa to provide therapy pets on January 15, 16, & 17 during Finals Week. Our aim is to help combat stress by providing therapy pets for students to play and spend time with before and after taking finals. We recognize that taking finals can be an exciting, yet stressful time for our students. We hope that spending time with the certified pets and trainers can ease that burden and help our students tackle their finals with confidence.
Please come to the Counseling Office to sign up for a therapy pet appointment. Spots are limited, so they will be awarded on a first come, first served basis.

Iowa Biliteracy Seal...Applications being taken now!
On April 17, 2018, Iowa became one of 34 states to offer a Seal of Biliteracy for students who show proficiency in two or more languages by high school graduation. The Seal of Biliteracy appears on a student’s transcript. Iowa legislators recognize the increasing need for biliterate citizens in our workforce. Thus, the Seal of Biliteracy was approved to showcase biliteracy of students to colleges and potential employers.
Urbandale High School is excited to offer the opportunity for seniors to earn a Seal of Biliteracy. Each year seniors will have the option to demonstrate their proficiency through a series of tests. Students need to demonstrate proficiency in two languages to earn the Seal of Biliteracy. Proficiency may be demonstrated on a series of English and non-English assessments. Specific assessments will be determined based on student needs and language(s) desired.
Seniors wishing to apply for the Seal of Biliteracy need to fill out this application by February 1, 2019. Applications should be submitted to the student’s counselor.

Leaving the building after school
After School at UHS
In order to maintain an orderly, supervised environment at UHS after the school day ends, it is important that students who do not have after school activities at the high school leave the building and campus. There is not adequate supervision for students to simply roam the building or hang out with their friends on school grounds.
Parents, we are asking your help in making UHS more secure after school. Have a plan for what your student(s) is doing after school. Make plans for your children to ride a bus, walk, or be picked up from UHS. There is not supervision at UHS past 3:30 on Monday, Tuesday, and Friday and 2:30 on Wednesday and Thursday for students who are waiting for a ride. Students who do not have after school activities will be asked to leave the building by the times stated above.
After school computer hours at UHS
The computer lab in the media center will be open the following times:
Wednesday, Thursday – 2:30-3:30
After evening games and activities
After events, students should vacate the building no later than 20 minutes after the conclusion of the event.

Urbandale Education Foundation -- Brad Peyton Memorial information
As we enter into another holiday season, the Urbandale Education Foundation would like to extend a sincere thank you for your support of the Brad Peyton Memorial Golf event. We are grateful for the 200 sponsors, participants, volunteers and dinner guests who came together this past June to honor a family, celebrate a life, and support Urbandale Schools.
Since the tourney began in 2014, we’ve raised over $100,000 in support of scholarships for students, classroom grants for teachers, and alumni connections. All of which wouldn’t have been possible without you!
As we begin to plan for our 2019 event, we hope you will again consider supporting the golf tournament. We are recruiting Title, Lead, Lunch, Beverage, and Hole sponsors. Details of all sponsorship levels are listed in the attached PDF; you’re also welcome to sign up online.
You may be in the midst of planning your charitable donations for the coming year. We will be contacting you shortly after the first of the year to request your commitment to supporting the upcoming Peyton Memorial Golf Tournament scheduled for Monday, June 24, 2019, at Hyperion Field Club.
Thank you for your support and we’re looking forward to another successful event in 2019!
Sincerely,
Dan Meyer
