UBMS Weekly Update

February 5, 2016

2015-2016 THEME: "HAVE THE COURAGE TO SUCCEED!"

This Week's "UB Special" Award!

"UB Special" awards are given to one student each week. Staff select a special student who has demonstrated good qualities of leadership, courage, perseverance, ambition, friendship, or achievement.

This week's "UB Special" award recipient is VICHAI XIONG!

Vichai is not only reliable to get himself to tutoring every Thursday, but he makes sure to get others there too. His attendance is perfect this year so far and it is great seeing him at some of our non-required events. We appreciate Vichai's attitude and willingness to help others and why he has been named this week's UB Special Award recipient! Please congratulate Vichai when you see him next!

National TRIO Day 2016

UBMS students are required to attend our TRIO Day evening program scheduled for Thursday, February 18, 2016 @ 6 PM at the Stayer Center.

We're excited to have former congressman, Thomas Petri, as our guest speaker. We will also be hearing stories by past and former TRIO students demonstrating how TRIO has worked for them.

Parents are also invited. However, please watch for your EventBrite invitation and RSVP ASAP.

Birthdays this Week!

We Wish a VERY Happy Birthday to:
  • TORI CUPERTINO, who will be celebrating her 17th birthday on Monday, Feb 8th.
  • MAI KOU XIONG, who will be celebrating her 15th birthday on Friday, Feb 12th.

Please join us in wishing these beautiful young ladies a happy birthday!

Required Make-Up Assignment

Students, IF you missed Chris's Financial Bracket workshop on January 26th (held at your school), please refer to his email earlier this week regarding your make-up assignment. It includes a visit to this website: www.financialfour.org/Default.aspx

2.) As you fill out the bracket, please note which of the financial terms win on each level and why it is more important than the other(s). There should be 31 entries total for the make up.

Let Chris know if you have questions.

This is not due until the 12th, but if you get it in by Monday the 8th, it will be included with this month’s stipend checks.

January Reflection Papers

January reflection papers are due Monday, February 8th at 4:30 p.m.

Students are given an extra week since the first Monday falls on the 1st - and we're nice! Please do no procrastinate!

Papers may not be turned in prior to your workshop with Chris on January 26th. In your reflection paper, you're expected to report what you learned, what it means to you, and how you plan to use the information you received from the workshop. Remember to take notes!

Another writing topic to be considered is: With the cold and sometimes gloomy days of winter, what sorts of things are you doing to stay emotionally and physically healthy? What works, what doesn't work? If you find yourself indoors more, what are you doing with your extra time? We hope searching careers, colleges, and scholarships tops your lists!
