Canby High School Family Newsletter

For the Week of October 28th to November 3rd, 2021

Thank you to Margie's Farm and Garden of Aurora for the generous donation of pumpkins!

Principal's Message

Good afternoon Canby High School Students and Families!

Halloween is here and the holiday season is starting. Like many, we are excited to welcome in the season and we welcome our students to dress up this Friday for school and the game. A few reminders about costumes….

1. No inappropriate or insensitive costumes

2. No "costume" masks covering faces

3. No fake weapons

It’s important to remember that, regardless of the costume, they can’t be disruptive to the school environment and should be respectful of all students.

Our MEChA club has been very active lately, contributing to school spirit and the community. (For those unaware, MEChA or Movimiento Estudiantil Chicanx de Aztlán is a student activity to promote leadership development, community engagement, and political participation.) Last week, the club did fundraising and supported Cancer Awareness Month at the boys varsity soccer game. Yesterday, the group invited students to participate in skull painting as part of the Day of the Dead celebration. (See the attached pictures.)

Finally, as mentioned previously, our Fall sports season is coming to a close. We wish the best of luck to our cross country runners who compete today at the District meet, and to our #4 football team who take on #2 Wilsonville in our cross-river rivalry. Also, good luck to our FFA students who are currently competing at the national conference in Indiana this week.

Stay healthy and strong, Canby! Go Cougars!

Athletics

Fall sports are winding down. Boys and girls soccer as well as volleyball have completed their seasons. Cross country is competing at the district meet today and football has their final contest before playoffs on Friday. During playoffs, league passes and ASB cards are not accepted for entry. Please see instructions prior to the competition and contact the athletic office with any questions.

This year, we have again purchased a license to broadcast all our home games on the NFHS Network for free! Away games may still require a subscription to the NFHS Network. Please go to NFHSNetwork.com and create a free account to watch all our games in the stadium and main gym. Please note: competitions that are in playoffs will require payment in order to view.

In addition to the Oliver Insurance Athlete of the Week, Canby athletics is excited to offer a new athlete of the week sponsored by Odd Moe’s. This award will go to the Unsung Hero of our athletic teams. This is the athlete that often doesn’t appear in the record books, but the team would not be successful without them. Look for the Odd Moe’s Athlete of the Week coming soon!

Winter Sports sign-ups are now open. Please visit www.registermyathlete.com to make sure you are fully registered prior to participating in practices or games. Please contact chs-athletics@canby.k12.or.us for more information.

Other Information

Join Us-Employment in Canby Schools

While parent volunteering continues to be on hold until further notice, we do have employment opportunities in our schools for part-time positions like instructional assistants, nutrition services, custodians and more. We are also seeking on-call substitutes for those positions, which would provide even greater flexibility. Visit our employment website to view all current opportunities.

Upcoming Parent Input Opportunities

Change is coming to Canby High School. If you are interested, as a parent, to serve on committees that provide planning input to future CHS projects, the following are opportunities will be available soon:

  • CHS Bond Improvement Projects- We are currently in the planning phase of a major renovation and building addition at CHS. Our partners in this process, Mahlum Architects, will soon be looking for more community input through focus groups.

  • CSD Daily Schedule Committee: Our district is interested in reviewing the current daily schedule and possibly making changes in the future. We need a number of parents to be a part of this work.

If you are interested, please respond by completing this form. (We had some problems with this link last week and it should be fixed now. Please try again if it didn’t work.)

Latino Parent Advisory Council

Our next meeting will be Nov. 2nd at 6:30 pm via Zoom. CHS will send a text to Spanish-speaking families with the invite and Zoom link. The meetings will be the first Tuesday of each month. At this next meeting, we will answer your questions about the website and go through resources that can be found there. Here is a google form where you can ask questions or make comments prior to the meeting,

CHS Video Broadcast Recruitment

Parents and students, do you have an interest in live streaming and announcing events? Would you like to help CHS and the community? Do you want to be a part of our Cougar team?

We are hoping to create a live stream broadcast network of volunteers to cover CHS sports and activities in a professional manner in keeping with the hard work that our students and athletes put in. Our vision is to develop a dynamic partnership with CTV-5 to support these broadcasts with interested students and adults providing the camera work, production, and commentary. If you have an interest in participating with this after school club, please contact Tyler Francke with The Canby Current and Now Hear This Studios at francke@canbyfirst.com. Please include your contact information and any prior media experience.

Attendance and Sick Students

To ensure the accuracy and efficiency of our attendance process, please remember the following guidelines:

  • To report an absence, call our attendance line at 503-263-7210 or email chs-attendance@canby.k12.or.us.

  • Please report an absence as soon as possible and no later than 48 hours after the absence.

  • If your student needs to leave class for an appointment, inform the attendance office as soon as possible. This will help us ensure that your student receives a note to leave class in a timely manner.

Remember that attendance matters and students who attend class regularly are more likely to stay on track, graduate on time, learn deeply, and get the most from their high school experience. Please partner with us to ensure great attendance and to remove any attendance barriers.

Bus Transportation

  • If you have any questions or problems with school bus transportation, please email Student Transport of America (STA) at canbyschoolbus@ridesta.com.
