Information for Parents
Flex Time at SMS
We are excited to announce the introduction of Flex Time at SMS. Flex is a block of time in our schedule (during Flight Time) dedicated for our staff to support students in a number of ways. The list below gives you an idea of opportunities students will have during Flex Time:
Academic support from teachers
Enrichment opportunities
Homework help/study hall
Check ins with counselors
Making up missing work, labs, and tests from absences
Club meetings
Extra practice for programs (band, choir, dance, etc.)
Guest speakers
Full implementation of Flex will begin at the start of the new school year in the Fall. Students will go to Flex two days a week, in place of their regularly scheduled Flight Time. Students will sign up weekly in StudentVUE. Attendance will be taken just as it would in any regular class.
In order to prepare for our Fall rollout, we will be piloting three Flex sessions during the last two weeks of this school year on June 7th, 9th, and 14th. Flex will show up as Period 7 in Synergy on those days. Students will receive more information in Flight Time about this and the sign up process.
We are committed to providing exceptional support and opportunities to our students and we are looking forward to offering Flex at SMS.
State Testing & Opt Out Information
ELA SBAC Testing – May 16, 2022: ELA SBAC testing will begin on May 16. If you would like to excuse your student from this testing, you must complete the Opt-Out Form and return it to Allison Kopp prior to 8:30 a.m. on May 16th. Requests will not be honored after this time.
A portion of the testing during the week includes using headphones or earbuds. Your student may bring his or her own wired headphones for this section of the test. Wireless (Bluetooth) headphones and earbuds are not allowed.
World Languages Adoption Materials: The Sherwood School District is recommending that Reporteros be adopted by the Sherwood Board of Directors as instructional materials for World Languages. The District will also be hosting a Community Review night on June 2, 2022, from 5-7 pm at the District Office. Feedback will be shared with the Board of Directors and the community prior to a vote on adoption of the materials, currently scheduled for June 8, 2022.

Prior Week's Information
Volunteers
We are excited to share that we are once again able to host volunteers at SMS. All volunteers must complete a background check and show proof of vaccination. If you are interested, please contact Stacy Holloway at sholloway@sherwood.k12.or.us to identify a time or times to join us. We have identified three areas where volunteer support would be greatly appreciated:
- Crossing Guards: Helping with the flow of traffic and protecting pedestrians. We have more crosswalks than available people. Stop signs and hi-vis gear will be provided. We will have two times for this: 8:00 - 8:30 and 3:15 - 3:45 (2:15 - 2:45 on Wednesday Early Release days).
- Lunch and Recess Supervision: We have multiple areas open to students at lunch and recess. Our lunchroom is an active place and we always appreciate having extra adults helping students remain safe, responsible, and respectful at lunch. Additionally, with sunny days returning and students spreading out more at recess, we’d be happy to have volunteers helping with recess. Times for this option will be 10:50 - 11:30, 11:50 - 12:30, and 12:45 - 1:25 except on Wednesdays due to the Early Release schedule. Please contact the school office if you are interested in volunteering in this area on Wednesdays.
- Hallway Monitors: There are a lot of bodies in our hallways and students sometimes need support in getting to class in a timely manner, respecting each other’s personal spaces, and following expected behaviors for hallways. When classes are in session, it is helpful to have adults in the hallways in case any students are in need of help or to have adults spend time near our restrooms to deter vandalism. If you are interested in helping with this, we have many times available throughout the day in hour-long increments, 8:15 - 9:15, 9:15 - 10:15, 10:15 - 11:15, 11:15 - 12:15, 12:15 - 1:15, 1:15 - 2:15, 2:15 - 3:15. On Wednesdays monitoring will end at 2:15 p.m. due to the Early Release schedule.
Support for Hawks View Used Book Drive: In order to promote literacy and increase access to books, the Hawks View PAC is collecting donated books for student readers. They are particularly in need of chapter books for older readers. If you would like to donate new or used books, SMS will be collecting donations in the Media Center until May 20th.
SMS Talent Show: The SMS Leadership will be hosting the SMS Talent Show on Friday, June 3rd. Auditions have been rescheduled for May 17th-19th starting after school in the SMS Performing Arts Center. Performances must be 3-4 minutes or less. Group acts may not include more than 10 people. Talent Show Audition Sign-Up Acts must be school appropriate and may not be changed after auditions.
