Cottonwood Creek Cougar Chronicle
February 2020
Our Cougars REALLY know how to ROAR!
A big CONGRATULATIONS to all of our 2019-2020 Cottonwood Creek Spellers who competed in our School Spelling Bee in December! It was no easy feat to stand in front of students, teachers and parents and spell words correctly for multiple rounds and yet our students persevered.
We are excited to announce our top four spellers who are also all 4th graders: Sanaaya Desai, Kinsey Perlman, Emma Wang, and Jerry Jiang.
Sanaaya, Kinsey and Emma recently represented our school in the Cherry Creek School District Spelling Bee. They practiced and were poised for the challenge at the District Bee! Good job, spellers! We are proud of your hard work.

From Digital Media
Hello Cougar families! In February, students at all grade levels will continue to build their technology and research skills in digital media. 3rd, 4th and 5th grade students are using movie making software to create book trailers for our library. These book trailers will be linked to QR codes, which students can scan with our school ipads to discover new titles. Kindergarten, 1st and 2nd grade students will be creating digital stories using Adobe Spark and will be sharing them with their classmates.
Thanks,
Sarah

Happy Heart Month!
Thank you to all families that participated and donated to the American Heart Association. I will message out totals and when student prizes arrive in a few weeks.
As we finish up Kids Heart Challenge, students will be enjoying Sock Hop dances in PE and Music. The Sock Hop is February 28! Make sure you sign up for food and fun! See you there!

From the Music Room
Hello Cottonwood,
As we start the cold days of February, the music room is bustling with activity. Second and Fourth grades are starting preparations for their grade level shows. Second grade will be performing the fable, “The Lion and the Mouse” as told by the beautifully illustrated, Caldecott Award winning, Jerry Pinkney version. We’ll be gracing the stage with music and drama the evening of April 23. Fourth grade is digging into the poetry found in “Out of Wonder” the Coretta Scott King Award winning book by Kwame Alexander, Chris Colderley, and Marjory Wentworth. This incredible piece of literature is a collection of poems, each written in celebration of a different famous and influential poet. We’ll be performing poetry fused with music and creative movement that celebrate poets such as Robert Frost, Langston Hughes, Pablo Neruda, Sandra Cisneros, Maya Angelou and others. This creative and unique program will happen the evening of April 30.
In other music news, our Fifth grade choir will begin rehearsals the week of Feb 24. If you are a parent of one of our Fifth grade students interested in participating, keep an eye out for more information and a registration email in the coming weeks.
Stay warm out there!
Mr. Pedregon

Greetings from STEM!
During the last STEM rotation the students used our Dash robots to program and navigate obstacle courses in the classroom. The students learned block code on iPads giving the robots the directions to “drive” through the course successfully. This activity encouraged problem solving and math skills as the students worked with members of their group to program Dash.
Up next, Legos and Lego WeDo 2.0 building and programing. Students will use Lego WeDo kits to build robots that can be programmed to complete different tasks from using a sensor to detect objects to moving objects with a robot constructed out of Legos. Students then work to find ways to improve their robot design and make it better.
