Mycoplasma Genitalium
Greg Johnston and Scott Simigian
Signs and symptoms
In men:
-bacteria can cause inflammation of the urethra or "urethritis"
-inflammation leads to symptoms such as burning while urinating or discharge from the penis
In women:
-symptoms less clear, but the bacteria have been linked to inflammation of the cervix
-infection of the female reproductive organs that lead to pain in the lower abdomen, as well as bleeding during sex
-inflammation in the pelvic area can lead to infertility
Prevention and Protection Against
Practice safer sex
Antibiotic Treatment
No sex until antibiotic treatment is completed and your usual sexual partner has completed treatment
Testing
Testing to exclude other sexually transmitted infections is advisable.
Treatment: use any antibiotics to lower inflammation, such as azithromycin and doxycycline
Complications it can cause in later years
-weakens your immune system so you become more susceptible to other infections
-the microplasma genitalium makes it more easy to contract chlamydia, which means you can transact the diseases from mother to baby
-can cause infertility
Steps to Prevention
-practice safer sex with the proper use of condoms
-both you and your partner should receive STD screenings before sexual activity
-above all, the best way to avoid contracting an STD is to practice abstinence.
