THE MARSIAN MONTHLY

April 2016

Upcoming Events:

Coaches Corner:

Dear MARS Family,

I hope your break from the pool was a restful one. Your coaching staff took advantage of this time to recharge and to scheme for the upcoming long course season. Hard to believe the "summer" season has started. We're putting together meet dates and activities for everyone. Stay tuned for more details.

The summer swimming season comes and goes seemingly in a few blinks of an eye. The official start date of our summer schedule is the Monday, June 6th. We'll begin morning practices for our older groups at that time. We again will swim at both UTA and the LISD WAC this summer for morning practices. Afternoon practices don't change, except at TCC where we have a 5pm start time for our programs, due to the TCC campus summer programs.

The swim meet schedule is more brief than in the short course season. Championship meets begin in the middle of July and end the first week of August. It's important to keep in contact with your child's coach to know when their championship meets are. Please don't hesitate to ask, and please try to schedule your vacation plans around critical meet dates. Again, please ask your coach for those dates. There are several different meets in play this summer.

I know several emails have been already sent with our gratitude for everyone's help with the TAGS meet. I'll again say thanks! I continue to receive glowing comments from the coaches who attended the meet. What we came together and pulled off was truly amazing.

I want to encourage everyone to follow us on FaceBook and Twitter. Coaches and parents are posting stuff all of the time. Also, please be sure to read your emails. We don't send junk. We try and filter which groups get which emails, so if you're getting an MARSian email it will likely pertain to you - either today or in the near future. Remember, email is the primary way we communicate.

We have an Intra-Squad meet coming up on April 29-30 at GCSID. All MARSian swimmers are eligible to swim. Volunteer opportunities will be posted in the weeks before the meet. This will be great “training meet” for swimmers and parents. Times from this meet will “count” and will be loaded into the SWIMS database at USA Swimming.

Have a great month and remember….it’s great to be a MARSian!

Ask a MARSian Parent

Q: How do I know when my swimmer is ready for their first swim meet? And, how will I know what events they should swim?

A: Your child's coach will advise you prior to the upcoming swim meet and you can ask at that time what events they should swim.

Q: My daughter is a bronze level swimmer. She is about to do her very first swim meet.

Any advice?

A: We have a wonderful document created by one of the original MARS Super Parents,

"Rebecca Dark" Guide to a swimmers first meet This document contains everything

you and your swimmer needs to know to have a great first swim meet.

Q: What does a “B” time or “BB” time mean.

A: Within each age group there are different nationally recognized levels of achievement based on times. All swimmers begin as “C” swimmers. As they improve, they advance from “C”, to “B”, “BB”, “A”, “AA”, ‘AAA”, and ultimately “AAAA”. The times required for each ability level are published each quadrennium (four-year cycles based on Olympic years) by USA Swimming. This permits fair, yet challenging, competition on all levels. See the MARS Team Manual and look for the section called: "Levels of Achievement" for more information on time standards.

This link contains the actually time standards for each age group and pool size. National Motivation Time Standards.

Q What is the difference between L3, L2 and L1 swim meets?

A: L3 meets will only allow swimmers to swim in events which they HAVE NOT achieved a "BB" or faster time.

L2 meets will only allow swimmers to swim in events which they HAVE achieved "BB" or faster times.

L1 meets will only allow swimmers to swim in events which are faster then the 15-O "AA" time.

See the MARS Team Manual and look for the section called: "Meet Information and Scheduling" for more information.

Q: Do the service hours start over in January?

A: Yes, service hours are per calendar year (January 1st through December 31st).

Q: How many service hours will we owe for 2016?

A: We will each owe 16 service hours for 2016 per family that have swimmers in Bronze and above groups.

Q: How can I see how many service hours I owe?

A: Login to the Mars Team Web Site.

Select My Account on the right.

Select $My Invoice/Payments.

Select the Service Hours tab.

If your number shows a positive value, then that is what you owe.
