Action Item!
All 3-5 homeroom teachers, please ask your students to click on the DRC Insight Icon on their Chromebooks to ensure that the program will open. Please make note of any computers that do not have the icon (see picture above) or on which it will not open and e-mail this list to Stephanie Haga by October 4th. If all of your computers are checked and work fine, please e-mail Stephanie and let me know all of yours are working.
RTI Reminder
Please make sure you are entering your behavior data on Fastbridge. If you need help, we will be working on this afterschool in Ms. Thomas' room today.
For Core Team next Wednesday, you can prepare by knowing:
- Who is in a tier for which area
- Who is providing which intervention
- How you are monitoring & how often
- What are the students' goals?
ESOL/Reading Interventions: Please note that if a student is in K-3 and is pulled for ESOL services, the language development program they use does NOT count as a reading intervention. If you have any questions about what intervention to use/ how to do it in your room please contact Diana Z.
Mrs. Tesmer using a Google Slides presentation to guide her mini lesson.
Lit Tip from Welch: How Do I keep the mini lesson to 10 minutes?
Use a timer! Either privately or one that is visible to your students to keep you accountable.
Make your connection only a quick review of YOU talking about what was covered from the day before. Don not elicit a review from students as this takes time and can slow down the pace of the lesson.
Be sure that you are stating the explicit Teaching Point
Name what you hear in the active engagement (turn and talk work) versus calling on kids. Say “I heard you say…” And say what you wanted them to be talking about - this eliminates calling on kids which can drag out the lesson. It's short - the goal is for kids to get a quick try with the strategy, not to master it or even for both partners to always get a chance. You can ensure no one dominates by simply designating an A and B partner and then saying who should start.
Have all of your charts ready to go. Since a lot are ones you make as you go along, either write quickly or cover up parts and reveal them as you teach.
When you feel the lesson isn’t clicking with them, GET OUT OF IT! If students are having difficulty grasping it, do not reteach as a longer mini lesson won’t help. Use your small group work for that.
Set a limit to questions and create that routine for after the lesson before sending them off.
Make the lessons your own! Make it make sense to you so that it will make sense to your students. Using a slide presentation to pace your mini lesson conversation is a great way to do this (email Welch for a template)!
Update Transportation Rosters!-Action Item
Attendance at Afterschool Activities
If you receive a note stating that a student, who is present in school that day, will not attend their after school session, please make sure Cindy Heibel is aware of the change. The after school programs check their attendance against ours. If a student is present in school, but does not show up to their after school session, we are responsible to find out where they are. Thank you for your help with this.
